Re: Definitive Versions of Songs

DDTW is great at Central Park, and nearly universally viewed as the definitive version of that song because of the energy...but after giving them both a listen, does that creepy swamp intro to DDTW on LT. 6 Fenway put it over the top?

By definitive, are we talking about what we consider to be the BEST version, or are we talking about what is the most iconic version.

    Re: Definitive Versions of Songs

Here's the first and most obvious that come to mind for me:

    JTR - tLWS sessions
This is how I know the song in my brain. The lyrics and tempo...this is how I expect it to sound.

    DDtW - BTCS
The pace has that perfect dirginess, subtle electric guitars (all the heft and heaviness comes from the music itself), and Alanis's parts are amazing...they take the song to another level

    Break Free - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kgbWpfbkEE
Perfect tempo (I find most of the other live versions to be too slow). Short trumpet solo and not only can you hear Boyd throughout, he caps it with a great solo. I was really hoping we'd get to hear this in '16, but we only got to Bristow, so of course not.

I had to go re-listen to that Break Free, disagree that it's better than Fenway. While I appreciate that you can hear Boyd, his solo misses several notes and doesn't beat the Fenway outro.

I think good arguments could be made that studio DDTW is the definitive version, and arguments could be made that it's not at all the definitive version. The studio version is that unique (and good).

Fenway has always dragged for me and the only time I’m into an extended Rashawn solo is when I’m at a show. And even then he’s not consistently great. But it’s mainly the tempo...it grooves so much better to my ears and feels right. Boyd is just gravy and I’m not a big gravy person.

Made a few changes. Folsom Field seems to be drastically overlooked here a lot of times because of the few ED tunes and the LL, but that show is literally flawless during the bands absolute peak. I honestly don't think any other live version of Crash compares to Folsom, same with Stay. Perhaps I'm biased as it was the first live album of theirs I heard and was a total game changer for me.

I think LT7 is overrated but that version of Crash is superior to Folsom IMO

What's the best version of LIOG w/ a Roi solo? RR95 is a favorite, but I'm looking for some other suggestions.

My favorite LIOG is LT30. It's just Carter, Fonz, and Roi in a sick ass groove. Don't get me wrong, I love Boyd's solos on Graves, but the early ones are so funky.

Minarets » Graves from WH10v2 is another favorite of mine (1994)

    Re: Definitive Versions of Songs
