They weren't guests. They were party crashers with microphones.

This might be a hot take, but I wasn’t crazy about “Captain” with Mark Whitfield at MSG. I was there and just wasn’t into it. I know he’s a great player, but a lot of his solo was completely out of key and not in a cool, jazz way lol.

Tom Morello on American Baby Intro. First...why that song for him to guest on? Second...I don't notice him on the recording.

Funny, how music hits people differently. I thought that was one of the best songs of the 2 MSG shows.

I think there are a lot of great aspects to his solo but the moments that don’t hit for me reeeally don’t hit lol. I would love to hear Stanley Jordan on that song over the same solo section.

He's noticeable on #41 on LT10. I don't have my copy to see how noticeable he is on ABI.

It was the 2013 Charlotte show and I was so stoked because I was finally going to see Stanley Jordan guest. Nope, he cancelled because of the rain. The rain. Seriously

    Haha WHAT?

Mine would be the Lovely Ladies, sadly. Never had anything against them. It was more so Dave's fault for tanking the setlist after a great opening run. Chicago 2014.

    LL's came out and then...

Junior Brown. July 23, 2001 on "Two Step." I was so excited because it shoulda been in his wheelhouse and been one of the great guest spots of the summer... Carter switched up the beat I don't know how many times trying to get him to come up with something, but the jam just droned on. Never hated Two Step before that. Always feel a semi-twinge of dread now.

Toots doesn't get the appreciation I genuinely believe he deserves... doesn't make him a great guest though. I wish I'd been the fan I was now back when I saw them open for DMB quite a bit.

To defend Smooth Rider, it was the highlight of the Camden show with Warren Haynes. Down By The River was great as well.

Not DMB, but the worst guest I've ever seen at any show was Bob Dylan with Bruce Springsteen. Shea Stadium 2003. It was terrible, a video probably exists somewhere.

Carlos Malta at the Gorge, I think 2016? I don’t know if he wasn’t close enough to the microphone or what but I thought it sounded terrible. His whole schtick just didn’t do it for me and I think he guested every single night.

I was at Black Eyed Peas Jimi Thing and I still say Alanis is more disappointing because it was considerably harder for Black Eyed Peas to disappoint me when I expected nothing from them

To be fair the black eyed peas performance got noticeably better by will.i.am doing very basic stuff , even looks like the video I watched Dave points at him to get the microphone- can’t blame him fergie just brutalized it

In The Edge's defense, U2 doesn't jam, in fact I think I seen it mentioned they don't care to in concert, so he wouldn't be strong at improvising.

There is no question that the musical part of that transition in the middle was pretty awkward and painful. And Toots' "yeah yeah yeah yeah" was very on brand for him, obviously not everyone's cup of tea but I actually liked that part.

But really, no matter how bad anyone thinks this went, Toots is a REGGAE legend. NOT a jam-band legend, not a jazz improv legend. While there can be plenty of improv in Reggae too, it's not the same, and I love that DMB and Toots were up for experimenting, it didn't go great, lesson learned for this combo.

But "asshole"??????? Wow, totally unnecessary. He's a great reggae artist and lovely human from what I hear, so maybe go easy on how riled up you get about what you don't like.

Wow, you're so right! I used to be a big U2 fan in the late 80s and I never really thought about "jamming" or improv at the time from show to show, you just cared about what songs they played.

But now that you mention it, and as long as I've been seeing bands like Pearl Jam and Radiohead and DMB who try as much as possible NOT to play the same song the exact same way every time, now I realize I don't remember U2 ever improvising on anything except maybe lyrics here and there. Interesting....
