Re: New Album Coming Soon?
Here's a thought (or so) on trying to release a new album and keep the streak...
The Avetts released the Gleam III album this summer...they started taking preorders early in the summer which were fulfilled in late August. They sold DLs, CDs, and vinyl...but the vinyl initially was available in black for anyone, yellow of Guild members (their version of the WH), and then they added pink as another Guild exclusive. There was also a deal w/ B&N for a blue edition (which we got). All but the B&N version INCLUDED a DL copy (sent via email). THEN they did a Drive-In concert at the Charlotte Raceway, and in the merch they included a Coke Bottle Clear edition of the album. I don't know how many they printed or each edition, but they ALL sold out and they're on at least a second pressing of the black vinyl (if it hasn't sold out again).
It's pretty common in the vinyl world to buy a black for listening and collect the special/ltd editions. As such, many of the Guild members bought EVERY color. I'm not saying that WH members (or DMB fans in general) would be interested in collecting the different variants, but it would increase the chances of potentially selling more copies...especially if they offered pre-orders.
They could do some variations on the process, like:
- not releasing the music for streaming until a few months after the release (undoubtedly something that would be extremely unpopular, but since I'd be buying it I wouldn't care)
- maybe each vinyl variation has a couple of unique tracks or a two/three variations w/ different bonus tracks, enticing fans to buy more than one copy (also would piss some people off, but [again] I'd be cool w/ it)
Anyway, there are ways they could increase the probability of maintaining the #1 album streak while still getting new music out to us sooner than later (despite touring not being on the table).
Does anyone know if you sell a vinyl w/ a digital DL code, can you count the DL if it's DLed along w/ the physical copy?
