Local hardware store was passing out pop corn out when you walked in, so you didn’t have to wear a mask today.

I was surprised how many people just had one on up in NH, although I did see a huge Why is Hunter Hiding sign in front of some auto body shop

I’m pretty sure Hunter is on a National book tour lol

Roughly a third of the unvaccinated population said a cash payment would make them more likely to get a shot.

    I keep saying it ...

Don’t care if I didn’t get any. I would have paid to get the vaccine.
But we’re talking a different group, so do what it takes!

What’s the medical community’s stance on getting vaccinated twice? I’ll do that if they’re paying people.

Meant to ask you all about this and how you react - or how you think I should have acted. The other day I was at the doctor and I knew that from past experience I could be waiting in the reception area for the better part of an hour so I brought the book I am reading. It is a novel by Walter Winward called '7 Minutes to Midnight' about an Allied attempt to sneak Martin Borman out of Berlin in 1945 to get the nazi documents showing the location of pilfered art and treasures from Europe. Book has been on my shelf for ages, just wanted to re-read it after about 20 years and it was as good as I recall. I was happily reading and my name got called so I stuffed a book mark in and closed it to walk towards the doctors office. A second after I got up some 20 something girl got up and decided to explain just how insensitive I am to the whole world, she was rude and crude about the whole thing. My crime - the book had a small swastika on the cover that she noticed from across the room which set her off. All I said was 'My apologies, I did not think a novel would offend anyone. I have a history degree and enjoy novels.' She told me to go fuck myself and I told her to stay safe and have a nice day. Seriously, am I not allowed to read a damned novel in public now because someone looking for an argument noticed the cover and decided to walk 20 feet across the room to upbraid me? The whole act she put on and her demeanor seemed a tad unhinged, I mean - it wasn't as if I had no mask on.

Jimmy Kimmel calls Caitlyn Jenner 'ignorant' for homeless comments in Hannity interview
    https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/...162945176.html

    Quote:
This week, the Jimmy Kimmel Live! host criticized Jenner for her Wednesday Sean Hannity interview during which she condemned the state's homeless crisis with an anecdote that was mocked for its privileged tones. “My friends are leaving California,” Jenner told Hannity. “My hangar, the guy across, he was packing up his hangar, and I said, ‘Where are you going?’ And he says, ‘I’m moving to Sedona, Arizona. I can’t take it anymore. I can’t walk down the streets and see the homeless.’”

Jenner, 71, a former Olympic decathlete whose famous family is one of the wealthiest in Hollywood, was slammed on Twitter for the "entitled" and "shameless" remarks. "Exactly, Caitlyn. Private jet owners are the victims," tweeted The Handmaid’s Tale star Bradley Whitford. "Because they are subjected to the specter of homelessness through the tinted windows of their limousines. You’re a great humanitarian."

Yeah, I just simply didn't see the point of making an issue out of it and no one else there even gave me a second glance even when the cover was in full view while I was filling out a form. I didn't have a nazi flag on my short or said/did anything that could have been remotely seem as pro-nazi yet she went to town on me for the illustration on the cover of a book written decades ago. She seemed like the sort that would have done the same if I had a book on Gettysburg with both US and Confederate flags on the cover illustration (common enough for ages) - I don't know man, they only thing I do know was I was just trying to enjoy a good read, not set someone off.

yeah I dont know if shes an asshole or if its more a sign of the times...kids are taught nazis = bad so swastikas must = bad too, despite the context.

As a teacher its scary as shit tbh. I've had multiple assignments that cross certain lines...kids made wanted/who's who posters of ppl from WWII, and the Nazis had swastikas on the posters which were hung in the hallway

I've shown a clip of an educator on Ophrah, an old white woman, who uses the n-word in a very specific context...she does whats called the "eye color experiment", where people with brown eyes get special treatment over those with blue eyes, to highlight how easy it is for people to discriminate based on an arbitrary thing. I always give the kids a heads up about the word being used, but I know one day I'm going to get called in to the principals office

Nail meet head, well said and I am unsure myself. It is frustrating, I spent both my undergraduate and masters years with my nose in history books and when I had the choice I would pick up ones about the Civil War or WW2 because those topics I topics I most enjoyed reading about because the stories are just astounding - I am pavlovian with that stuff, put me at a book sale and I will come out with a bag of books about both topics. Hence, a lot of books I have bought over the past say 25 years have swatstika's or confederate flags on the cover art. I am well aware the ideals that the confederate government fought for were deplorable and the whole damn planet knows of the evils of the nazi's so I hardly think imagery of either on a history book should offend people, we all read what we enjoy. Should I only read these under a gibbous moon on a Tuesday lying in bed when the day of the month is an even number?

I can understand someone being taken aback by something with a swastika on it. Pretty sure it's taboo to use artwork featuring Nazi symbols nowadays. With that said, it's pretty ridiculous for people to just lash out from assumptions. I feel like that's just kind of the times we live in now. No one is willing to inquire about things before they throw a hissy fit. And even when they learn that someone didn't do something intentionally, it might still not matter to them.

Can you read books with swastikas in public in 2021? I guess. Should you? I dunno. Should you be surprised someone says something? No. Should she have been a dumbass about it? No.

You hadn't read that book with a Nazi symbol on it in 20 years and decided the day you were going to read it would be in an enclosed public space. In 2021. In America. And didn't think anyone would say anything. Didn't have another book. Seems like an odd choice.

I would have an eyebrow raised if I saw a stranger reading a book with a swastika on it in 2021

Can't be sure if that's a history nerd or someone trying in a very tiny way to flex if they're a stranger to me

She is the one who looks bad in this situation, not you. Some people just absolutely love to be offended and go into a mode where they can talk down and be the moral authority over someone else. You are reading about one of the most significant and interesting eras of humankind, taking an interest and learning. For someone to look down on that so they can be a Karen is absurd.

This book was published decades ago when it was not a big deal to put a swatstika on a WW2 book I had been reading. I get people assumptions but that does not make them right IMO. She could have casually asked, what are you reading and I would have explained in which case she would likely have understood I hope. I am not some neo-nazi, I do not judge anyone based on ethnicity, race, skin color, sexuality, religion, etc, etc - I judge them on who they are and what they do. That same courtesy would be appreciated in return.

Reading a book was asking for it. I was causing no issue nor being rude in any way, TBH I was pretty stunned she came over to lay into me, in fact I was dumbfounded because plenty of times I have read books with swastikas or confederate battle flags on them in open w (for decades now) with no incident. I just wanted to keep reading something I was enjoying while wasting my time in the waiting room.

You hadn't read that book with a Nazi symbol on it in 20 years and decided the day you were going to read it would be in an enclosed public space. In 2021. In America. And didn't think anyone would say anything. Didn't have another book. Seems like an odd choice.
I was surprised, never been in that situation before. I didn't chose it at random, I have been reading a lot of history since the covid lockdowns given my pre-conditions I can rarely go out for another 5 weeks to come after being virtually stuck home for over a year now like some bubble boy! I did not pick it at random, I was cleaning up my selves and thought to myself 'damn, this was a great read' and since I am doped up on painkillers a book where I know the ending and characters seemed perfect (no going back to figure out exactly who character X is), I have been doing a lot of that. No ill intent, I did not even think anyone would take notice of what someone else was reading because I never do in public.

Can't be sure if that's a history nerd or someone trying in a very tiny way to flex if they're a stranger to me
I am a nerd, never claimed otherwise and would happily have explained had she not been a bitch. Maybe I tend to give strangers the benefit of the doubt but I would never walk across a room to rudely lecture a perfect stranger about their reading material and that would include Das Kapital

Try this similar analogy to humor me MD, I know you are reasonable. What if some stranger was in my situation reading a book with the flag of 'palestine' on it - hamas, plo, pflp, etc, etc routinely boast of their desire to annihilate both Jewish people and the nation of Israel. Since I disagree with the 'palestian' belief system should that give me open season to walk across the room and accost a complete stranger rudely for their choice of reading and perhaps even something mandated to read by a college or something?

Thank your for your frankness and response, much obliged because I felt much the same way. Reading about something that interests me, wow that must certainly make me the right-hand man of david duke! oh - and professionally offended people drive me insane!
