Re: Share your unpopular DMB opinions.

Fonz, a teenage bass prodigy and also the member whose playing is LEAST talked about, is OVERrated? That's an interesting one.

I think people here talk more about Buddy Strong's contributions to the band than Stefans and he's been in the band for 10 minutes compared to Stefan.

I couldn't agree more. Every summer we have with them is a blessing. I take no show for granted. This could all be over at any moment.

I mean saying Fonz sucks is wack, but let's not get carried away here. There are multiple better bassists still alive and kicking just in the same musical neighborhood as DMB. Phil Lesh, Mike Gordon, and Victor Wooten are three names that come to mind.

Okay. Phil Lesh and Mike Gordon are not "better" than Stefan. Different, yes, but not better. And Victor Wooten doesn't count because he is an alien

I agree with this. I love The Dead and Phish, and I think Lesh and Gordon are both great players. But I’d honestly put Stefan in the same tier as them. Gordon is just a much flashier player and is up in the front of Phish music than Lessard is to DMB.

That said, there are still some bass legends alive that are in an entirely different tier than those 3 guys, and I believe they would agree.

    Stanley Clarke
    Marcus Miller
    Victor Wooten
    Jimmy Haslip
    Jimmy Johnson
    Jeff Berlin
    Victor Bailey
    Alfonso Johnson
    Etc.

Sure, yes, Fonz is one of the best bass players alive by mere fact that he has decades of success playing professionally--I figured the question "is he one of the greatest compared to his peers?" would be implied.

Edit: didn't realize you listed Stanley Clarke, as well. He rules.

Yeah, one person says he's overrated and suddenly we've lost all perspective Stefan is very good at what he does: he's rock solid, has excellent chemistry with Carter, and writes some great lines (Dreaming Tree, Crush, Seek Up.) But he is not on the same level as a Lesh or a Gordon. Those guys can absolutely take a song over. I've never heard that level of versatility or inventiveness from Stefan.

I fucking love Jimi Thing. One of my favorites. I hope to hear it every time I see them. Idk how people can hear Carter and Fonz in that absolute GROOVE with Jeff and Rashawn playing over it and not love it. Like…goddamn it’s just so good. It’s an absolute showcase of the band’s abilities.

I feel like a lot of people underrate Stefan's skill set in general, not him specifically but the contribution of a player who has his style to an overall arrangement

You’ve used the right term. Those are bass legends. Taking only the first three you realized how much they changed the perception of the bass guitar. Which is prominent in their live shows. I don’t think that they could just sit and do all the hard work that Fonz does, which is to let the others play at their best. What do you think?

Re: Share your unpopular DMB opinions.

The at least annual "Fonz ain't so great (or even good)" discussion reminds me of Kim Thayil's statement before Soundgarden went on hiatus...

"I'm better than 95% of the guitarists playing...it's just that the other 5% are professional musicians."

That said, Fonz is a far better bassist than Kim is a guitarists...BUT I love Kim.

As to comparisons, if folks want to be fair in comparisons, Fonz shouldn't be compared to true jazz players and sidemen. They are often jacks of all trades and/or have to do what's expected of/dictated to them. Fonz, like Flea, JPJ, Mike, Phil, Les, and countless others are integral parts of longterm creative units that write, arrange, and play new/original music. They've got no one's shoes to fill, are either given a blank canvas upon which to create or they're also a writer that provides the foundation upon which the rest of he song is built.

Some of best musicians in every genre are the players that you take for granted, the ones that don't take over a song or part of song. That said, I remember the first time heard Warehouse, it made me feel like I wasted years learning to play the guitar to a competent level. It made me wish had switched to bass. That line is absolutely killing and is a massive feature of that tune. And it's only one among many in the catalog. Captain is another where the bass is a right out front, so present. Dreaming Tree is another obvious one.

Many folks do not fully understand how essential the bass is to bridging the rhythm from drums/percussion to the harmony of the song. Sure a band can live without a bassists, but you hear AND feel its absence. This band is not the one you love/loved without Fonz. If you think they could/would be, you definitely underrate him.

Hot take: Shotgun from 9/23/06 is incredibly overrated.

9/2/06 from the Gorge is much better.

Fonz is the best bass player possible for this band. That’s basically how it sums up.

That said, idk what’s going on with him this year but he looks ridiculous with those glasses. He’s giving off a very “how do you do fellow kids?” style

Gaucho is a cool song and I don’t see anything wrong with the lyric “you gotta do more than believe if you wanna see the world change”. Very cool guitar riff, and overall the music is great. The last minute or so gives me an “American Baby” vibe.

The chorus just doesn't sound good to me. I usually don't care too much about lyrics. I like the sound during the verses, but the chorus drags down the song.

Really appreciated this take. I felt Fonz's absence at the Gorge last year 100%... just wasn't the same at all (and still wouldn't have been even if Carter were there). He adds so much in such subtle ways. Watch what he does during the Rapunzel chorus... or You Never Know... or Seek Up... or MME.
