If the past 3 albums are any road map as to what to expect on the new album, it should be all new material. I think of the last 3 studio albums, Stand Up, Big Whiskey and AFTW, only one song that was road tested made the follow up studio album, that being Hello Again.
There is more then enough unreleased material that could be polished up and made into a great album, but just doesn't seem to be the way the process goes with the band. They get ideas on the road, play around with them, then once in the studio a whole new set of songs appear during the recording. The quote from the article that leads be to believe that the new album will be mainly new material was this:
Quote:
...me and Carter were recording some music together. We have a lot of stuff, so my plan is that we’ll put together some music this fall so we can have something out hopefully the beginning of next year. Hopefully, get it finished before that. I think we have some great music and some stuff that Carter and I worked on that’s added to the pile. There’s a lot to choose from. I just hope I choose wisely.

If nothing else, there is vault of material that could see the light of day after the band hangs it up via box sets or other special releases. The money machine will not stop just because the band is no longer is around.
