The Sturgill Simpson thread

Sturgill Simpson really began turning heads and drawing attention with Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, his follow up album to 2013's High Top Mountain.

His latest release, A Sailor's Guide To Earth, a tribute to his son, is a masterpiece. I don't think it is unreasonable to expect this album to be nominated for a lot of awards, and will absolutely be on top albums of 2016 lists.

Here is a link to him performing the album, in it's entirety, live on KCRW.

http://www.kcrw.com/music/shows/morn...urgill-simpson

This guy has become one of the great singer/songwriters working today.

I dont know about masterpiece, but I like it a lot. Never heard of the guy before this album.

Ended up accidentally clicking on a link to NPR First Listen in the AOTD thread and figured Id give it a chance. Drew me in right away and listened all the way thru. Probably heard the album 5 total times now. Its very very good.

I scored a ticket to him playing the album in full at Rough Trade in NYC last Tuesday, it was unbelievable. Here's rolling stones review http://www.rollingstone.com/music/ne...-show-20160420

Couldn't believe how good he/the band/ the album was. The album is unbelievable.

It's people like Sturgill that are getting me into country music. There's some really great country music out now between him, Chris Stapleton, Jimmy Johnson and a few others. Not to mention the classics like Willie, Hank and others.

The last two albums, and particularly the new album, don't strike me as country music at all.

His first album certainly does though.

I hate modern country music for all I'm worth.

That said, this new album wasn't a bad listen. As stated before, the most recent two albums have a very distinct sound. They're very different from the country-pop garbage saturating the radio. The first one, not so good.

I really appreciate that Simpson has a voice that would definitely work with the "Chew Tobacco Spit" "She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy" phenomenon but actually applied himself and added some thoughtful lyrics and instrumentation. I really liked "Keep It Between The Lines," "Call to Arms" and the Nirvana cover.

As someone who is endlessly barraged with today's country-pop due to where I live, an artist like Simpson with his two most recent albums is very refreshing.

I haven't watched yet, but yes, he has horns on his CD's. I hope he played Call to Arms. That song rips.

Edit: He did play Call to Arms. The other was Keep it Between the Lines. Love both.
