Technics, probably thinking of the 1210, pretty much the go to deck for DJ's. Should run around $550 new for the MK2. Official product page is here - http://www2.panasonic.com/consumer-e...del.SL-1200MK2

Made by Panasonic.

There are lots of manufacturers of great turntables to consider so I wouldn't limit yourself to just looking for Technics, although if you're looking to DJ rather than just listen to music that might be one of only a handful of options to consider.

There's a Rega P3 on Audiogon as well without a cartridge for $299.
Not looking to DJ, just want to listen to my boxes of vinyl that have been sitting idle for a the past few months.

Then I would definitely look into a Pro-Ject, Rega, Music Hall or Audio-Technica.

    Abby Road- The Beatles
A Rush Of Blood To The Head- Coldplay
On and On- Jack Johnson (only ten bucks)
    Gold- Ryan Adams

Im loving all of them...especially Abby Road

I just started and I am absolutely hooked, just wish I had unlimited disposable income to keep buying every album I want. Too bad you cant steal vinyl like u can mp3s. Its almost as if I never heard any of these songs when I throw them on my turntable. ^ I have abbey road as well and it is breathtaking on vinyl. I am very amazed at how much quality we really lost by compressing music after all these years, it's good to hear music as it was meant to be heard

I went to see Cults last night in Northampton and I got their full album on vinyl. I feel really connected with this band, I really liked their first single Go Outside when the blog gorillavsbear released it last year. I got them to sign the 7'' yellow vinyl, they were surprised to see it because it was such a limited release from when they just started. Last year no one could even find their names, it was kind of a mystery. Here it is over a year later and they released their full length and I got to chat with them last night after their show. What a great time.

I also picked up the new Fleet Foxes and Girls EP...oh and the KOL record store day release!

A year and a half later, I finally made a solution to this. I took an old modem cable, cut it, stripped its ends and it made myself a ground wire. (Thanks to my late father for being an electrician and showing me shit like that.)

I am giving my brand spanking new copy of Jeff Buckley's Grace its maiden listen. I started on side B so Hallelujah was first and I have to tell you that a hum-free listen is glorious. Holy crap. I am going to use my turntable even more now.

    Hey guys,

I have an important question I thought someone here would be able to answer. I have two Polk Audio tsi500 tower speakers. A few months back I found a vintage receiver at my local record shop for a great price. It is a Sony STR-6800 SD. My roommate already had his receiver hooked up to my speakers so I had no need to hook mine up till recently. Unfortunately, it started shorting out within minutes of the first song I played. So here's my question: are the tower speakers asking too much for the receiver to handle or did I kinda get screwed by my store and need to find an audio repair shop?

That receiver should have absolutely NO trouble powering those speakers. You may have an old fuse in there that blew when powering it up for the first time in ages. May want to have someone take a look at it. If you can look inside and see the blown fuse, you may even be able to replace it yourself. Just pull the fuse out (you can tell it's blown if there's black all over the inside of the glass) of the harness and take it to Radio Shack and tell them you need one like it. They come in bags of 4 for like $3.19.

It could be something else as well, but that's a good place to look for a potentially really cheap fix vs. taking it to an audio shop.

Good luck! The STR-6800 SD is a fabulous vintage receiver if you can get it humming.

I bought my mailing boxes from these guys, they work fantastic - http://www.fingerpop.com/id182.html

Seal up all four corners with clear packing tape/cellotape and if you want some added stiffening cut a piece of cardboard from any other cardboard that fits just inside and put it in front or behind or use two.

If you have sleeves and the record you're shipping isn't new you can place it outside the cardboard sleeve within an outer sleeve to prevent seam damage to the LP cover.

Sleevetown is a great place for inner and outer sleeves - http://www.sleevetown.com/lp-sleeves-inner.shtml

Alright so once I figure out why my receiver is acting up and I move in to my new apartment I will finally be ready to find a decent vinyl player. I had a standard audio technica that was $90 but I returned it because I just couldn't get over how quiet the sounds was compared to the ipod being hooked up at the exact same volume. I am looking at the pro-ject III. Any advice/recommendations? I will have a $150 credit with amazon so I could get the pro-ject for $200 right now.

It's a very nice entry-level turntable, I have been well-impressed by demos I've heard on the Pro-Ject III and the Ortofon cartridge it comes with standard is great also.

I have the the Pro ject Debut III and I love it. You'll want to get a preamp for it though, I have a Cambridge Audio 540P and they sound great together

I love Amazon. Just realized we had 104 bucks in points from an Amazon CC so I decided to grab some vinyls.

Paid 71 out of my pocket for

Fitz and the Tantrums - Pickin' Up the Pieces
    RATM - RATM
Eddie Vedder - Into the Wild
    Pearl Jam - Yield

Not bad considering Yield was 90 bucks alone

You need a pre-amp if your receiver doesn't have a phono-in connection. Basically the sound from a turntable needs to be amplified before sending the signal out to the speakers and most modern receivers, except high-end ones, don't have phono-in connections. The pre-amp is just a tiny box that you connect between your turntable and receiver. Cable from turntable-->pre-amp-->RCA cable to receiver.

I just bought the original Manhattan (Woody Allen) soundtrack. All Gershwin, performed by the New York Philharmonic. I cannot wait until it gets here. I only wish it was winter, because I am smiling just thinking about listening to it on a cold night. But, sweltering July will have to do for now.

Hello to the thread, by the way. I wouldn't call myself a collector or an expert like most of you are, but I love my (relatively) small collection of vinyl, and I grew up listening to and admiring my parents' albums. My whole music obsession can be traced back to those old records.

Me as well! I started one a few months ago but I haven't added any of the new stuff. Has anyone gotten Bon Iver's new album on vinyl yet? If so how does it sound?

^ Nice. I need to get the rest of Billy Joel's Albums and some Beatles. I was spoiled when I live in Vegas. Had a record city (think that was the name) right near my house. I could go there and spend 30 bucks and come home with a ton of shit. They had thousands and thousands of Vinyls. Haven't seen anything close to that in this area.

Awesome. Thank you. This will definitely help.
