Anyone know how/why they randomly had Butch at the Cville 2017 show? Lol that was so random… I don’t think Dave acknowledged him or said his name and there was never a close-up of him the whole broadcast from what I remember.

You really couldn't even hear him in the mix either. I now wonder if it was an initial attempt to see how keys would sound with the updated lineup after Boyd was scheduled to leave, but if I recall, Buddy wasn't even initially contacted until late winter 2017/18.

I always thought it was just they invited him to sit in randomly. He was hanging out with them that week. Probably nothing more to it than that, but definitely weird he wasn't even acknowledged

I know Boyd could be hit or miss with his performances but the band does not sound as good without a violin. I understand moving on without Boyd but not replacing a key instrument I still don't understand. I still go to D&T shows but I won't go to another "full" band show til they do. For some reason I still keep my Warehouse membership

The band played to 20k fans over the weekend 90 minutes away in Bristow and he's brokering an appearance with a tribute band on Twitter.

    Sad times for old BT.

Couple of questions: Does DMTB currently have a violin player or was he removed when Boyd was?

Also wasn't there confirmation that Boyd showed up in Minnesota (02/03/18) for the pre Super Bowl show and that's when he was initially on hiatus to get himself straightened out?

I watched that webcast and Justin Timberlake's high energy set blew DMB off the stage. Yes, Dave introduced Butch at one point. It was very strange that he was like... in the dark/shadows and not highlighted much on the webcast.

Buddy was contacted to possibly play with DMB for the 2016 tour. His "audition" was playing Steady As We Go for Dave, I believe. Both of those are pretty well documented from Buddy/Rashawn/Dave interviews. They would have had 8 people on stage in 2016 like the original 2008 tour idea (+ Tim and Rashawn, without Butch leaving). But then Butch left, although the plan was to have Tim, Rashawn, and Butch all together.

For whatever reason - I don't think it's been said why - Buddy did not come in in 2016. He ended up coming in in 2018 after Boyd left/was fired/whatever. But the original possible plan was 2016 - they at least reached out to him for it then for that year.

Re: Boyd sitting in with DMTB?

To me there is nothing wrong with the idea of Boyd possibly sitting in with a cover band the issue is boyd being a shell of himself playing on stage with lots of errors or no chemistry with other musicians. Pre Covid when boy had a little run it was cringeworthy from some of the facebook live videos I was watching from Boston and another Boyd solo tour stop.

It's still wild fans specifically saying "boyd should return to the band" when the last public appearances were absolutely embarrassing. I get fans wanting a new fiddle player.

Boyd is sitting in with a DMB cover band. How humiliating. But maybe not, the man wears leather outfits on stage.

We may never get the full story with how private the band operates. I don’t have any connections but can somewhat put the puzzle together from stuff posted from trusted people.

Back in 2016 on the boards Jake alluded to making sure you see the band this year as things will be different after this tour. I believe even after he saw a show he posted something along the lines about seeing the band for last time in their current line up.

There is a pre show picture from N3 of the Gorge 2016 that was posted on socials for the drive in series. Boyd is not with the group, he is disconnected on his phone. I can’t get the picture to post, some can pm their email address and I’ll happily send it to you if you can figure out how to get it posted here.

That N3 setlist was very boyd heavy. Stone, 41, graves, ants, pig. And as someone else stated, watch that dvd/YouTube drive in. . If you’ve been following this band the way we all have during the years, the energy from Boyd was more than we are taking a year off. Watch his lie in our graves solo and compare it to
others, he basically went to every member on his solo as that was his goodbye. I was lucky enough to be there in the pit and you could tell in that moment that something was different.

2017 Cville show, he wasn’t himself on stage and missing from the post show picture with Stevie posted on social.

I believe the decision for him to leave was in 2016. Was it pretour or during, I don’t know. I 100 percent believe he knew the gorge was his last show. Cville happened and that threw a curveball to everything because the announcement hadn’t been made yet. Remember butch was also there and barely shown.

When this band is done, I’d love to read a tell all about their years on the road.

I'd love to read that as well. With all this about Boyd and tbe DMtB, and I know that Boyd is free to do whatever he wants. But I just wonder if the DMB themselves would be really put off by this whole thing. Both towards Boyd for doing it but towards the tribute band also for getting this potential ball rolling. We'll have to see how it shakes out if it does happen.

2018 Warehouse Calendar shipped in DEC 2017; Boyd is in only 2 of 39 photos of band members, and the only time in calendar history a band member didn't get the full page photo of his birthday month

I remember that being the real smoking gun that Boyd was out long before his announcement on Twitter.

Just went back and watched that LIOG from the Gorge 2016. Certainly one of the more inspired Boyd performances in years. Song starts around the 1:48:00 mark.

I agree with this 100%. The violin was something that truly added to that unique sound that I fell in love with. I'm know Buddy, Rashawn, and Jeff are great players, but that doesn't change the fact that Ants isn't the same without a fiddle.

Agree with this. There are a few moments where Buddy's violin effect sounds pretty good though. Pig, for instance.

Re: Boyd sitting in with DMTB?

I know Boyd was the cancer in the group for a long time. Stressing the band and management out both onstage and off and adding little input musically when asked.
Friends of mine that mock the current day sans Boyd DMB lineup dont realize it's this or nothing. Dave was ready to breakup the band in 96, 06 and now I am reading 16 as well and imo had Boyd not left, and Buddy joined, we wouldn't have "DMB" imo anymore.
Buddy, coupled with Rashawn and Jeff already being hired guns, and probably realizing he can technically go solo, or he can just keep Carter/Stefan , call it DMB , and continue the machine... while feeling as a "new band"... Was a perfect scenario for the spark DMB needed..

    BUT

that all being said, I dont buy the "boyd was out" before the allegations came to. maybe the band knew in advance / earlier than we did. but that was imo the final straw and in a way, it likely fell into their lap at a time they were looking to get rid of him
i just feel like most of the fans believe this is the case, and while we may be wrong, i would think someone would've cleared that up by now, maybe even Boyd himself.
The timing was very suspect but it was very cut and dry of Boyd playing shows until the news, and not playing thereafter...

And he stood directly in front of Stefan who wouldn't make eye contact with him for a like a full two minutes.

I gotta check this out. That sounds awkward and uncomfortable as all hell. I know the link is posted above. I'll give it a watch as soon as I can.

It's not that bad. Mostly, Stefan just seems locked into what he is doing, although he definitely engages more with Carter than Boyd.

    I've also heard this.
