Re: Best headphones to get for listening to DMB?

I have some great Sony in-ear noise cancelling headphones, weren't very expensive either. Apple headphones have always been super uncomfortable and not great sound quality, can't imagine why so many people use Air Pods now- but I'm also an old school guy that prefers wires.

Bose Quietcomfort Noise Canceling works great for me. They have a rich, full sound. Bass is strong but not too overpowering.

I’m basic and own a pair of the Beats Studio 3s. I have to say, the way the guitars sound (Timmy’s and Dave’s separately) on both BTCS and Crash, is great to me. The sound isn’t nearly as rich as others, and it is more bass heavy, but I find myself hearing guitar parts that I’ve actually never heard when listening to songs the other hundreds of times previously.

Solid acoustics, in my opinion of course.

    This.

In terms of price:quality ratio, either the Sennheiser 58x Jubilee (you can get it on Massdrop) - a pretty unbeatable open-back headphone for the price
or the Cooler Master MH751 (surprisingly amazing affordable closed-back headphones, you can find it on Amazon).

Pricey but I have been through so many headphones that have disappointed me until this pair. Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless. Fairly new from Sennheiser and their version of AirPods. Holy shit do these thing sound magical. It’s amazing that Bluetooth wireless headphones can sound this good. One of my best purchases in years. But they are 300 dollars and have some minor issues not related to sound quality

If you like drums go with Bose, if you like bass guitar choose Beats, if you like Tuba I'd go with Sennheiser, if bassoon is your thing though, definitely look into Grado. Love clarinet? You gotta look into AKG, but if oboe does it for you, look no further than Audio Technica. Now here's where it gets tricky, if you love both soprano sax and french horn but hate the harp, you have to consider Etymotic Research. If you can't get enough snare but really don't like toms, go with Shure. I have an affinity for grand piano, so obviously I have Beyerdynamics.

Did I miss any instruments? Oh fuck of course, guitars! Go with Koss.

If you're a flautist, fuck you!

Although you may just be noting your brand of headphones, I've always been in love with the oboe; such a powerfully moving instrument. One of my favorite pieces of music showcasing the oboe is Ennio Morricone's "Gabriel's Oboe" from his score of The Mission.

Mozart's Serenade for Thirteen Wind Instruments, K. 361 also is a good one, it's the music Salieri is hearing and describing when he first hears Mozart's music in the movie "Amadeus" at the Archbishop's Palace - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDs_UfeVhuM

Are the Koss also good all around headphones? I'd love not to break the bank for some over the ear headphones I'd use only occasionally and the Koss seem very reasonable in price. Thanks in advance Doby

Can’t tell if this is serious or a joke, but my Sennheiser hd600’s are my absolute favorite set of cans, so maybe pretty accurate.

Anyone tried the Hifiman He400i’s? The price has come so far down that I’m tempted to pick them up on a whim, but it’s also concerning that the price has come so far down. I’d usually be driving them with either a Schiit Magni 3 or a Pete Millett Butte.

Sony WH-1000XM3 is the best set of headphones I’ve put on my head. They’re 350... so I don’t own them. But go try them out at a Best Buy. I was blown away.

I own the less expensive WH-CH700N. They were 150. Very good sound and have an EQ app to fine tune it.

I've got the Koss QZ Pro, and I think they sound great! I listen to pretty much all my DMB with these, except when I'm in the car. Doby can tell you the technical stuff about why they're good, but I just thought I'd chime in about why my ears are happy!

Here's a review of these, and another pair of $4,000 headphones. Haven't watched the whole thing, but he does talk about Dave Matthews' Tiny Desk Concert at the end!

I work in the industry. Everyone is going to have a different opinion but in general, the bigger they are, the bigger speakers can be included and more sound can be produced. In ear headphones cannot sound as good as over ear headphones. My advice is get big ones at $100 or less and you'll be happy.

No better resource out there for getting started with this stupid hobby...

A bit more than your desired price range, but I love both the Philips Fidelio X2 and AKG7XX for listening to this band.
