I tried it right after I finished AC Odyssey and it felt like mostly the same type of game in a different setting. Dialogue was much better but that stuff can get grating for me personally when its too much.
Not really trying to pass judgement on it one way or another, it just felt like another good RPG to me I guess is all im getting at. Im curious as to what I missed.

My highlights:
1. The story. The epic build of the story is just wonderful. The characters are so memorable. Like in other games, you have different areas with certain casts of characters, but the characters are all so unique and deeply written. And once the Ciri element gets going, it's off the charts. So story would be my answer for why it's such a great game.
2. Setting - While there are many games with great settings, The Witcher's is just great. All the different areas and the backstories. The top one being the happy bright kingdom in the Blood & Wine expansion.
3. Cards. This is probably more nerdery. I've never been a card player, have never played Magic or Pokemon even. But Gwent in this game is so addictive, loved that minor aspect. You don't have to play much at all, but if you like, you can spend hours on it.
4. Gameplay - The skill trees can get pretty advanced and you can reset on a whim for some cash. You have to actually think about it. And there's also customizable elements. Much better than forgettable AC or other game skill trees. I started with a heavy sign (magic) build, and then switched to combat. Never went too deep with the green poison type builds, but I guess those are the strongest and easiest to cheese the game after nerds spent countless hours tinkering.
