I don't know if I agree that it would have topped them, but it would have been on par, absolutely.
I don't like thinking about it because it makes me angry to this day, but whatever. Here we are.

I thoughts Steve's takes on mining for gold in Boyd's parts was interesting...think about how many Skreeeeee's this dude has dealt with

Steve's right on Boyd. I mean it's almost as like Boyd isn't there on Everyday, Stand Up or Big Whiskey. And then AFTW came and Boyd was much more prominent again.

    These are great listens-

I wonder what he was talking about when it comes to the negative aspects of BTCS carrying over to Lillywhite Sessions that ultimately ended that

I was under the impression this whole time the record was scratched by the label because of the lack of "tripping billies" but seems to be quite a bit more

I can't wait for the Lillywhite Sessions pod, holy hell.

I couldn't help but think about Away From The World during this too..during that time, I just saw that as the band making a great decision for the fans...now it seems like almost a humbling, "marriage counseling" if you will, that Dave and the band went back to Lillywhite for help with Boyd.

Really got me to hear the sadness in Steve's voice when he asked Matt about Boyd leaving

I can't speak to this stuff or any specific but just in general that it was becoming tougher to finish songs and make an album, which they talk about with DDTW and stuff and then it just became even harder during tLWS and if you watch The Road to Big Whiskey they talk about it vaguely. They were having trouble finishing stuff but no one would talk about what their issues were so then it became "well we can't finish an album, lets get a new producer." Lillywhite said before he wishes they would have come to him and talked about it but they didn't and then just ended up firing him. Lillywhite seemed to allude that the record company interfered a little bit on tLWS during this podcast and my guess is it was the changing times. This is just my interpretation but the band was massive going into 2000 still even during all the boy band stuff and the record company wanted a high selling record to put out with radio hits. Then when they saw tLWS they didn't see anything that would get massive radio play and that's why Ballard happened. Even he said so, again during The Road to Big Whiskey documentary, the original idea was Dave would come out and they'd write a few songs. Which sounds like he was there to help Dave write a few radio hits to place with other songs.

Wow the first part was great but that second one was straight up amazing. I'm very surprised both guys went into such details. The interviewer did a really great job. Now I have to go back and relisten the whole album.

You get the impression Steve thinks of BTCS as his creation, almost as if he used the musicians of DMB to yield to his will and bring his vision to life. I can see how that might have planted some poisonous seeds, especially if he couldn't resist the urge to self-gloss, which he seems prone to.

That said, its undeniable that BTCS as we know is not something the band would have or could have arrived at with any other producer. He was the right man at the right time and BTCS remains the most unique, and artistically successful DMB album. And I bet that bothers some members of the band on some level.

Really incredible listen. Eagerly anticipating the Lillywhite Sessions interview. To an extent we had already heard plenty of talk about behind the scenes of BTCS and comparatively we have such little info about the real goings on surrounding the Lillywhite Sessions, but Steve sounds very eager to finally let it all out!

Also, there is absolutely no way Machead is being released on any 20th anniversary editions of BTCS, and even if it was, if it was released in the form Lillywhite describes, 99.999999% chance we'd all go "...... that's' it?" haha

Amazing interviews. The Lilywhite Sessions podcast is going to be a great listen. I kind of felt bad for Boyd listening to part two. Sounds like he really had to be babied in the studio and when he mentions how great of musicians they all are it seems like he excludes Boyd in that conversation.

I have to wonder: when Steve spoke about other producers speaking to Boyd as if he was a certain type of musician instead of meeting him on his level, does anyone else think maybe Mr. Musical Director falls into the latter camp, and that's what has led to Boyd checking out lately? Rashawn joined in 2006. Really became non-existent after Roi died...Rashawn gained more prominence. I wonder if there's a there there.

Listening to him talk about Boyd's limitations musically and as a studio contributor was the most fascinating part to me. Confirms what we've all already assumed. What a great great great interview, definitely going to go back and listen to the others and eagerly await the LWS pod.

Steve might fancy himself a little much, but I have no problem giving him his full due when it comes to this album. The band trusted him to arrange/sculpt their work into something cohesive in studio and he's the only producer who mastered it —*let alone approached it the right way. When he was talking about other producers just zoning in on Dave and using him as the sole channel to access the band and their sound, I let out an audible 'yes' at my desk.

And jeez, when he went on a tangent about how Dreaming Tree was the last 'Dave as we knew him' song. That really clicked with me too. LWS had the potential to give us music as we knew it up til that point – but like he said and some others have said in this thread —*what made UTTAD/Crash/BTCS work reached sort of a breaking point and perhaps there had been some poisoning of the well and it no longer worked as it should. For whatever internal reasons those were. It all clicks now.

No kidding! This is what really stuck out to me.

He also made a comment about how each member would play through the whole track then he would sculpt and edit their parts. This is what a great producer does. This is also what they are lacking on stage. Tim shredding for the whole song and never gets edited. It’s def a problem, and it shows how important Lillywhite was to the process. Restraint.

It’s what a great film editor brings to a movie. Director/actors get all the credit but an editor makes major contributions that are never seen or understood.

This podcast was great. Can’t wait for the Lillywhite Sessions version. And would love to hear his thoughts about working with the band on AFTW all those years later.

Never underestimate a good producer. Remember when Tim played with them and there was still an element of active listening with the audience? That's gone now.

Matt did an excellent job with this. Glad to hear we may be getting the next one before the year is over. Not sure what Steve is thinking comparing Dreaming Tree with the death of a great songwriter, especially considering his name is all over The Lillywhite Sessions.

Actually, he's just a tell it like it really is kind of guy, and it's awesome that he's so honest. If you go back and listen to old interviews (maybe listen to him when he's talking about other people besides DMB). He's as willing to talk about his bad decisions and fuck ups as anyone. Says what he's good at, admits what he's bad at. My favorite is when he told the story about turning down Axl Rose with the Guns N Roses reunion album or whatever it was. Said he couldn't take on a project if he didn't like the singer's voice. Told them he wasn't the right guy. Yeah, there's some ego there, but it's hilarious and he was right. Axl Rose sucks.

He was talking about Dave and his lyrics... not songwriting. Most of the LWS lyrics weren't final, and he probably doesn't remember that Bartender's lyrics pretty much were finished. I still think he's fundamentally right... certainly after tLWS, it went in another direction entirely. Some occasional great moments, but that phase was pretty much over.
