I get it perfectly. I've been screaming it from the rooftops in numerous podcast episodes for YEARS.
This band no longer has the drive nor the current ability (mostly because of lack of drive) to nail the transition to the reprise, and that payoff is the entire point of the reprise. That explosion and then the smoldering, beautiful remains of it that follow. They haven't done it well in a long, long time. Hard to say it's really been done properly since 98 or 99. Whatever magic they had in a bottle back then has clearly left them with regards to this tune. Just listen to Live in Chicago - THAT's Last Stop.
As special as the song is, and as much as I would love to hear it at any show, it's been played with an asterisk in my mind pretty much since I started going to shows (2000). "This just doesn't sound right anymore."
And now they've done Last Stop like they did Grey Street. That reprise is the new 3rd verse, folks. It's gone.
