The universities will likely suffer more but at the end of the day under the table agreements are never going to stop, especially at universities. If it's not money, it'll be sex. I heard several stories of girls propositioning their professors for some physical accompaniment for a bump in letter grades.
Unless I heard wrong yesterday, the universities are not in danger of getting in legal trouble, as backward as that sounds.

I heard racketeering charges thrown around, but I guess that could be specific to the school workers, not the school itself in any capacity.

Why arent the schools responsible for the actions of their employees here?

Any other normal business it doesnt work like that. Are all schools involved publicly funded universities?

What “normal business” isn’t defrauded when their employee takes money from the till or gives away the product?

it's not like these employees were convening the board of each school to get them to confirm that they were all ok with massive fraud

Don't even think I'm halfway through this article but so far it seems at the very least the Stanford Sailing team was paid off...so that might implicate the university enough..

    https://deadspin.com/here-are-all-th...-ad-1833236579

Otherwise, yea, I think it'd be an issue of proving the schools knew what some faculty members were doing and/or were receiving money, which they probably didn't. But then again who constitutes as the university?

Yeah this is more of what im saying, where is that line drawn? Who would have to know in order for the school themselves to be implicated. College admission is a bit different from just giving away hard product.

Im not claiming to understand this much though, im just asking.

well strictly speaking, we don't know that that's categorically true. My point being some of them may now get a wee bit of a closer look from the IRS, at least.

    Fair point.

I'm just assuming Lori has that sweet, sweet Full House royalty check coming in every month that has to be huge. Plus her husband runs a (from what I understand) pretty successful fashion brand.

    Well this is just dumb.

"The parent, Jennifer Kay Toy, claimed in San Francisco Superior Court that her son Joshua — with a 4.2 grade-point average — was not admitted to some schools because of the "despicable actions" of parents implicated in the scandal."

How could she possibly know that to be true?

Yea, that's the thing...there's no way to prove your kid was passed over specifically for these cheaters.

That being said...that girl who sued for Affirmative Action made it to court so who knows.

You don’t have to know it’s true. The point is that it could be true and, very well, may be true.

Edit: I believe in civil court, the “burden” is more likely than not.

I don’t think the burden of proof that you’re talking about exists in civil court.

i saw a post on FB from someone who was paid to write college entrance essays, resumes, etc. not for this case, but the same type of situation, cheating to get into a certain school. getting into the right school comes with connections and "personal brand recognition." that leads to internships with fortune 500 companies, jobs with those companies, promotions with those companies, C-level positions with those companies and million dollar paychecks, all by skating by on name and nothing to do with actual ability.

People acting like this is a shocking thing. Does the general public think that rich kids or celebrity kids are smarter than the rest of kids their age and therefore get into more competitive colleges and universities by natural gift?! This is one of the least surprising scandals ever.

It wasn't football or men's basketball so they probably didn't care enough to look into it if that sport's coach was cool with it.

what kind of basic research should they do? the "side-door" guy made web profiles and falsified team records...beyond checking that, what is the school supposed to do?

the sports these kids are alleged to have played weren't your typical sports that high schools even offer

Some people certainly think they (rich kids at least, maybe not celeb kid) are 'better' or someone to aspire to be. This is why some talentless, unskilled 18 year old moron who has to cheat her way into school can make 5 figures per IG post. Also why an entire swath of the middle class on down consistently votes in favor of things that help the rich. But yea, it's shocking because they were caught, not because it's happening.

I'd assume many sports programs, especially if they are good/win, aren't micro-managed too much. Main admissions probably just takes their word for it; ie if they're good enough for the team and their grades are within what the school accepts, why bother double-checking?

Again, no one is surprised by this. The only reasons people think this is fascinating is because people are getting caught/punished and that there are celebs involved.
