The Official Rashawn Ross Appreciation Thread

I'm not a very experienced thread-maker, so please be gentle if you don't like this one .

I'm a huge fan of Rashawn Ross! He adds so much to every song he guests on and his trumpet sound really fits well with DMB. I hope he sticks around for a looong time and maybe plays a few whole sets with DMB (just a thought).

What do you all think?

Love what he added at the shows over the summer, especially at SBC and Red Rocks. From what I've listened to from this winter tour, he hasn't had as many solos which is kind of dissapointing.

I think my favorite show he's played on is 8/13/05. His solos on Warehouse and Two Step are awesome!

Does anyone know what types of things he was playing on Nancies the other night? Did he solo? Backup stuff for Boyd?

Yea, I think he is the man, as i have said before, I also think part of the reason he is playing with them so much might be due to DMB maybe thinking about bringing him into the studio with them this winter, I mean i could be wrong, just my opinion. But i would be all about that also.

Eric Krasno, has been holding it down, he has a distinct sound and I think his soulful styles add some more depth to all the tunes he gets down on....

    Can't Wait for ROCHESTER!

Btw, has anyone noticed the song selection of the guests so far (Ross and Krasno)

While they could easily have had Kras and Ross play on 41 and Jimi thing, Crush, which they know well and could make insane!!!!!, i think it makes a statement towards what they are after, by choosing songs that are new to them(Kras and Ross) Too Much, ODH, Stay, Smooth rider, instead of having them play on songs they have more often like 41 and the others i listed....I can appreciate the way they are mixing it up, and trying to put a new twist on some different songs.......Thoughts?

I support this thread fully. He has a great stage presence and his playing really lights up the songs. I like adding another horn to the mix!

His Two Step solo at SBC was awesome. Best version of that song I'd heard in years.

And yeah, his tone really does fit in well with the band.

Yeah, he fits in great with DMB. We didn't even know who he was in Hartford and we were amazed at the way he fit in so seamlessly. He was even better when we saw him out at Red Rocks. Hopefully we'll see him at MSG this weekend. I think he could fit in great on Bartender among others but what I'd really love to hear them bring back with Ross is So Right!

I feel like they should replicate the set of 5.29.02 with Ross on the whole show, and change the encore to:

    Hello Again
    The Dreaming Tree
    The Last Stop

That would probably go down in history as the best show of all time. Ross on Crush, Warehouse, Too Much, 41, So Right, Pig, DIDO, Watchtower, Ants.... damn

Ooooh I'm listening to that right now and imagining some sweeet trumpet licks!

Yep. 8/13/05 is one of my favorite Two Steps, up there with 9/19/00 w/ the Flecktones, Central Park, RR '05, RR '95, 6/1/05 and many more...

I think some a full set or two with Mr. Ross is in order, not that he should take all the solos from Leroi and Boyd, but I think it'd be cool to have him play a whole set with DMB. He's always welcome at any show I'm at!!!

I think they both deserve one pretty equally.

Which is just a little bit less than Tim Reynolds and Steve Lillywhite.

Funny thing is I didn't even enjoy that show all that much, I had a ball the night before but was let down for 5-29. My seats sucked relatively speaking, I had to sit next to a jackass who kept security up my ass all night, they didn't play much of what I wanted to hear, RR was REAL tenative on Watchtower.. he didn't seem to know where to come in, Darryl was in a pissy mood when we needed a favor, a couple of my friends took off after three or four songs, and I had a pretty nasty headache. I was happy to get out of there that night, I remember enjoying RRatFB more than DMB. Looking back at the set I wish I had been in a better mood.

I had an awesome time that night... one of my favorites. It's amazing how mood can change a show for you. I just remember being floored with the opening of the set... Crush, Warehouse, Too Much, 41, So Right, Pig... just amazing. Really enjoyed DIDO, Watchtower, and Ants too. Everyday was magical to me and I don't even like that song. Also, I was 6th row center and with my three best friends... two of which had never seen the band before and loved it. Just a great night.

I felt the way you did, though, on 12.20.02. I had a headache, had an issue with a security guard, had relatively crappy seats, and couldn't take the slowness of Captain, Bartender jam, STDH, Grace, Loving Wings, WTWE, Everyday. The show picked up at the end, but it was almost too late.

And I can't believe I was in Jamaica the next night. Fuck.

I really excited for the 12/3 tape to come out so I can hear Dancing Nancies > Warehouse w/ Rashawn . I loved his solo on Warehouse at SBC, can't wait to hear what he added to Nancies.

Pig, DiDo, If I Had It All, and So Right were about all I really enjoyed that night. Sounds dumb but I just wasn't in a real good mood that night, despite a (looking back) stellar set, I didn't have a very fun time all things considered!

You have to be in a real party pooper mood not to enjoy Ants.

By the time Ants came on I was contemplating how much trouble I'd get in if I chucked the kid next to me down onto the stage.. we were front row of the balcony.. basically right over Boyd.
