The fenway release is horrible. The fake crowd noise makes it completely unlistenable. The final studio lyrics are better too.

I have always loved that version of IOY.

    Are you serious?

The studio lyrics are far worse.

This recording sounds awesome. At the very least, I'm excited to be hearing a recording with Dave, Carter, Boyd, LeRoi, and Fonz in 2018. I don't really care what it is.

Live version question - in 2006 there is a version where the first line of the second verse is “look at you go again” and Carter matches Dave’s voice with the kick drum. Anybody know what I’m talking about? I have always hoped they would keep that, but they did not.

Pretty sure that's the debut of the song. It's my favorite version as well, they nailed it right from the get go.

If true, this is by far the worst thing Rashawn has ever suggested. Re-record or use the old (better) intro.

I like Sam Cop but completely agree. As has been said around these parts for the last 10 years, this would be a great single that could appeal to the masses.

I posted this in the rate the album thread but I'm pissed Lillywhite wasn't the one who produced this. Opportunity missed. Shotgun will probably eventually get the same treatment and that'll piss me off too.

I think the Target release has the live intro as a separate track, so there is a way to avoid having it on there.

Or just edit the track yourself and remove the intro...

The live intro going into the studio version on the album is really clunky to me. Feels kinda chopped together. Other than that I'm a big fan of the track, lyrics and production are solid.

This is the best track on the album. Don't @ me. It's so good. They recorded it perfectly. It's the best song they've recorded in years.

Intro is odd but whatever. This song is a gem.

The more I hear this the more I hate the live intro. It reminds me when you start a Rock Band song and they have the fake crowd cheer.
I do enjoy the song but that part is so stupid.

Drummer of 21 years here: I fucking love the "Coldplay groove". It adds a much needed motion that complements what Stefan's doing on the bass. The long dotted-halves in the vocals drag the chorus down, but the steady eighth groove really keeps the momentum.

This is my favorite of Carter's work on the whole album.

The Idea of You is totally Anakin Skywalker's love letter to Padme. (I love the song BTW, just funny that that interpretation isn't all that crazy)

I obviously have no idea how the actual conversations went down but Dave's account was that Rashawn said something like, "I wish we could make the intro sound like it does when we play it live" and Rob Evans (or Doug McKean?) was all *jotting in his notebook* "make it..sound...live...got it" and here we are.

So, not entirely Rashawn's fault from what I understand?

Regarding the intro, so they ripped it off YouTube. Whatever. It does an interesting job of highlighting what sub-par audio quality sounds like against a clean studio track. It's a tiny nod to their live presence. Not gonna make or break the album for me.

Regarding the track itself--ironically, I had expected this to be my favorite track on the album, after all the negativity and worry about the new songs that was hovering around prior to release. And now... now, I still like IOY, and I'm glad we have a studio capture for posterity, but it's actually the least compelling moment on the album because I've known and loved the song for so, so many years. I just appreciate that they didn't screw it up, that the recorded something that sounds close to my memories of listening to a bootleg copy.

Love the live intro fading into the studio cut... Anyone know what show the "live intro" was pulled from?

IMO the high water mark of the entire album.

According to the Producers video, the intro was ripped from the bands Youtube page and pasted right on top of the track. Per Rashawn saying something about wanting it to sound like it's live...

Makes sense that they’d take a live version. Trying to record that intro freshly in a studio would create a weird disconnect. There’s obviously a disconnect with the live version, but the fact that it’s live warrants it. Imagine if they had re-recorded that live intro in the studio. Nearly impossible to get a seamless transition, and fans would complain about that being the only thing they can think about while listening to the song.

The weird thing about that live cut is that the progression only plays 3 times instead of the normal 4, and that’s not what the YT video does. Might’ve ripped it from another source.
