Agree with this. I wish they'd split the difference and let Jeff do some small runs in parts of the songs, sort of like how he does with Lover Lay Down right now. It's what I miss most about Roi. His ability to play around Dave's vocals is what made the band for me in its original iteration.

In an unrelated topic, I really hope that they bring back the third verse for Grey Street next year.

Saints Go Marching In but I don't think you can hear Dave that well.

I want to see Come Tomorrow’s outro just become an instrumental jam. I think the theme of the song would come through stronger without lyrics. Same thing with Drunken Solider, wouldn’t mind that whole song being instrumental.

Final one in that same vein, I’d actually enjoy a Proudest Monkey>Satellite Jam where PM just segues right into the solo.

I'm amazed that the band hasn't yetplayed Come Tomorrow with a guest vocalist. Whether it be Brandi Carlile already to having Grace Potter (she opened for DMB at the South Dakota shows, THAT would have been throwing us hardcores a bone at that type of show) guest on the song.

I'm very cautious about the future sound of the band primarily due to the addition of Buddy Strong and Mark Batson being back to produce. Buddy is a fine addition to the band but the organ-driven rock jams like Can't Stop, Stand Up, Lousiana Bayou, and Smooth Rider don't appeal to me. I can see use getting more songs like that with the new album coming out. The band is going to evolve from a jazzy open sound to a smash you in the face R&B sound. Batson even said his favorite song off Come Tomorrow was Can't Stop.

I love the Watchtower intros from the fall 98 tour. Specifically Live @ Chicago and LT 39 from Oakland.

Didn’t see the band last year but have been enjoying some of the streams from 2019. That said, I agree and think that’s where this band is headed. Buddy is alright, but the praise he gets isn’t really justified. Butch was seriously so much better in this band. Buddy is a bit over the top and the B. Strong shirts are so lame.

Been trying not to bash the new sound and take what enjoyment I can from it. But when I stop and think about what this band sounds like now it really does kind of blow my mind that this is what the Dave Matthews Band evolved into. Never would have imagined they’d sound remotely close to what they sound like now.

We are now critiquing the shirts the guys wear? Not everyone can pull off the Butch Taylor look. Go check out the Giants Stadium poster if you don’t believe me. Comparing anyone’s fashion to Butch on that night just isn’t fair.

Has there been an announcement about any of this? Lots of assumptions about the next record and producer here that I don't think are substantiated. Not saying you're definitely wrong but maybe knowing that these are not sure facts will ease your worried mind a little.

Jeff's playing on Belly Belly Nice studio reminds me so much of LeRoi that at first I thought they had pre-recorded snippets of his sax solos.

i agree 100% belly belly nice is a perfect showcase for how jeff should be used in the band.

It'll be interesting to see what direction the band goes in with songwriting, obviously anyone can list songs they don't like and hope they don't continue in that path or list songs they do like and hope they continue, we'll see

You’re spot on with this. I’ve been relieved walking out of my last two shows—seen some great moments in 18 and 19. But I’ve not felt excited about the direction the band’s heading in since coming back from the off year.

It’s funny that it’s such a fine line though. Because what Buddy has brought to Bartender is really great stuff, while Butch seemed to meander around too much in that particular one.

However, I much prefer Butch as an overall player. And the band was on a different playing field back then

Can anyone recall what it was like being a fan in 2005 and seeing Rashawn gradually get integrated into the band? Was it generally accepted that he was joining or was the 2006 announcement a surprise?

im pretty sure it happened kinda organically. i think he was w soulive, and they were opening for dmb, and he sat in, as a guest. and then gradually after that he would sit in w the band for some tunes, mostly stand up songs. over time he started sitting in on more and more songs, and leroi liked him a lot, and wanted to have a "horn section." i think something to that effect.

and he wasnt officially in the band until 2008, just a "guest" from 2005-2008.

This fan base is funny because we’ve always complained about everything.

I remember people generally being excited about having Rashawn join as the trumpet sound was new and fresh. But I remember everyone begging for Tim to join or tour w band, and now people complain about him. People complained about Butch at the time, now they want Burch back.

I even remember people saying Jeff Coffin was better than LeRoi and should join band permanently as well.

This is a fan base incapable of being happy and enjoying what they have.

I think Carter is the only member of the band who people don’t really have an issue with.

And in Dave's case, lots of people call him lazy whenever he plays a set he wants to play that those same people throw little conniptions over.

What blows my mind is that people are still out here complaining that they don't like Rashawn's sound, Jeff's playing, or Tim's contributions.

Rashawn joined [officially] in 2006. Jeff in 2008 (and guested a whole bunch prior). Tim has been there from the beginning*.

Rashawn has now been with DMB almost as long as Roi was.

At this point, if you don't dig what they're bringing to the table, you don't really like the band. That may be over-generalizing and a little unfair, but it's absurd that so many on this site act like the three of them are still just touring musicians and can't wait for them to leave. Homie, they are the band.

To the bold - to be fair, about 85% of active members on this forum don’t like the band and haven’t since 2005.

I think it's not so much unhappy having them in the band, but just toning them down. The complaints are not that Tim is in the band, but that he just overpowers the music frequently. Turn him down a few notches and it'd be perfect. Butch got musical diarrhea and played long boring piano solos. If he had scaled it back the complaints wouldn't bar there. As for Rashawn, I've never had an issue with him. I know other people on here do, but I think he and Buddy are incredible additions to the group.

As for Rashawn, I've never had an issue with him. I know other people on here do, but I think he and Buddy are incredible additions to the group.
Tim has already been turned down by about 100% beginning 2018.

This is a funny comment to me. I saw three shows in 2018 and songs like DDTW, Rapunzel, sounded like noise because of Tim. The mix that is presented during the drive ins is exactly how i wish they sounded live but they really dont.

Typical Situation - Flat Five Studio (absolute buffet for the senses). At the "pummel the shores of the sea" lyric, Carter makes a gentle crashing sound with a cymbal, but I swear I can hear something else when played on a good sound system, can't hear it the majority of the time. It's almost a sound like LeRoi gently putting a breath to the sax. Anyone else hear this? Doesn't matter, it is magic, regardless.

Yep, and his tone is better, and you can hear Dave, and don't have to hear Boyd
