Official "Bela Fleck and the Flecktones" Discussion Thread

This is the place to discuss tours, music, random facts, and other stuff about one of the best bands on earth.

I'd like to start off by saying that they rock.

ANyone going to see them this summer? I'm gonna be at the Hamilton show on "4/20"

i would like to continue by agreeing with yin_yang on the flecktones' rockage band, and would like to add as a sidenote that said user's screenname is a wonderful album.

anyway, back to normal english -- i really hope i can see them this summer. if they come up to the ny area, i will.

also, how awesome are fleck and meyer? did you see any of their shows? that was =-o stuff.

My god, that man is a genius. He gives cello a new meaning. Too bad he isn't part of the regular lineup, but I would love to see him have a Butch-like place in the band.

What's your favorite album? Their last two, IMO are the best. I just bought them today!! I've been listening on burnt copies for a year now, finally decided to buy them. WOW :

I might be going down to Columbia. That is the closest they are coming to St. Louis. I've seen them five times now. Twice with DMB. I support this thread as well the band, although me thinks it will not stay alive. But I support it nonetheless.

Yeah, looks like the gutter for this thread, although I can hope for the best. Nancies has a good BFFT thread going, something around 1,500 posts. Hope this will last.

They better open for DMB in T.O. even tho they are playing that night. I can only go to one show, which sucks. I can't belive they are in the same town at the same time and plan concerts at the SAME TIME!

actually, edgar meyer plays bass -- which makes it even more impressive. he gets well into the violin's range and plays as well as a violinist. he's truly ridiculous.

speaking of cello, though, edgar has collaborated with the cellist yo-yo ma on a few albums. if you like americana and classical music, do yourself a favor and get appalachian journey. mark o'connor (violin) is on there too. it's amazing.

as for the flecktones, i think my favorite albums are the last two also. it almost seems like cheating to pick little worlds, though. :-P but yeah, they're all so great that it's hard to pick. i will say that i never got into ufo tofu as much as the other albums, though.

If you're not into them yet, don't spend money, because if they are not your style you won't be happy with spending the money. I would reccomend a live d/l off of www.archive.org

the best quality shows are in my list, just check it out and d/l any of those shows. I would strongly reccoment 4/25/04, that show is just amazing!

if you do want to buy an album, you cannot go wrong with 'Live Art' its the flecktones at their best. If you want a studio album, 'Little Worlds' is a 3 disc masterpiece. if you're not up for 3 discs, there is '10 from Little Worlds' which is kind of like the best of Little Worlds. The next best album IMO would have to be...hmmm...'Outbound' by a hair over 'Left of Cool'. Left Of Cool does have Dave Matthews guesting on a track called 'Communication', so f you're a fan of DMB, pick up that album for sure!

    good luck

well, you gotta get good quality recordings, where all of the instruments are really well pronounced. 4/25/04 or 11/17/03.

but yeah, i understand where youre coming from, but a mini-set and a solo show are so different. at a 2002 DMB show they are putting out songs, most of which arent even done yet. at a 2004 solo show, praticularly a early 2004 show or a late 2003 show, those are the best stretches i have seen them do. although their tour now was sick, i loved that New South Africa came back for the Acustic Planet Tour!
