Re: Random dmb thoughts that don't need their own thread

Saw Tyler Childers last night, absolutely awesome in every way.

He had an interesting format where they did 8-9 full band songs, then he did 3 solo songs, and then back to the full band.

Would be interesting for a DMB show to have the same format. Albeit, Childers crowd favorite songs go back to his acoustic days.

On the "Crashing The Quarter" bootleg, does anyone know the dates (shows) that tracks 8 thru 13 are sourced from? Have had the CD for 20+ years and have never figured this out, and all it says on the back is Tracks 8-13: USA 1995...

    1 Tripping Billies
    2 What Would You Say
    3 Crash Into Me
    4 So Much To Say
    5 Too Much
    6 Tomorrow Say Goodbye
    7 Ants Marching
    8 Satellite
    9 Tripping Billies
    10 Lover Lay Down
    11 Dancing Nancies
    12 Rhyme And Reason
    13 Ants Marching
Tracks 1-7: New Orleans Jazz Festival 1996
    Tracks 8-13: USA 1995

That's a shame. We still have quite a bit from winter 1998 officially released though if that's the case. Did the damage include the summer tour as well?

Super brief listen through, sounds great. Any story as to how this was just discovered?

I have no information of what was actually damaged.

Understand. What was happening in 1998?? Damaged recordings of the tour, and lost tapes of BTCS? Who was responsible for taking care of these lol.

Glad to hear. He just doesn't do it for me personally. I like a couple of his songs, but not interested in seeing a whole show. His voice has a diminishing returns quality for me. Less is more.

BUT to your point about the set, I don't think Dave could or would want to do 3 solo songs mid set. I'd love it if they did a 3 to 5 song acoustic thing, rather than a whole set like 2 sets was. They could just do 2 D & T, and like 3 with Carter and Fonz only. That would be cool. But the sets for DMB are all about flow. This would just throw a wrench in the middle of it. It was was one big thing I disliked about 2 sets. They'd get cooking as a band the last 2 songs of the first set, and then disappear for an hour, come back and have to like start the engine up again.

Lots of corrupted files in 98. Not sure of all the details but it’s a huge shame

Extra thankful for LT57 then for sure. Here’s hoping maybe something else from that summer (and of course Fall/Winter) was still salvaged.

Who knows what survived and what didn't, and I would welcome any further 1998 releases, but it's not as if 1998 is lightly represented now:

    - LT57
    - LT39
    - LT53
    - DMBlive 11/30/98
    - LT1
    - Live in Chicago 12/19/98

The biggest contribution of Boyd's I miss is him belting out "HAWNEYYYYYY HAWNEYYYYYYYY" during Everyday.

Oh no doubt. Just thankful we’ve gotten something from the summer in light of the extra confirmation about the 98 archive damage is all.

I sometimes wonder what it would be like to go back in time, attend a concert, let say to the 3.13.99 D&T show that was just released to streaming, and call out for songs that don't quite exist yet, or not yet known to the public. Like imagine sitting listening to the album and you hear someone shout 'Grace is Gone!' or "Space Between!!" Its plausible it wouldn't necessarily affect Daves writing but years later we would be like whaaa?

After hearing what Andrew Watt has done with Pearl Jam, I would be in favor of him producing a future album or even bringing back Glen Ballard.

Somewhere in the past decade or so Dave switched the order of the lyrics in Stone for the part coming out of the chorus: "But if not, I'll go, I will go"..

"Ahh.. from that fool's mistake" &
"To bury the past for I don't want to pay"

Both of these clips are from after the 2nd chorus when they up the intensity of the song, and the first clip works so much better IMO.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSsnQ9I-seI&t=13m34s (typical for 98-2008ish?)
Dave singing "to bury the past!" as they get to the climax of the song. This line fits in so well with the building intensity of that section.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1f1_q4jv2E&t=235s (past 10 or so years have been mostly this way)
This falls flatter for me & is a hair underwhelming. Dave signing "Ahhh ahh ahh..." as Carter is doing his tom fills doesn't pack as much of a punch. To me, it works better after the first chorus when the energy isn't as high.

Still my fave song, just a minor change that's always bugged me a bit

This is just a thought/question I've had before that I'm not sure I've asked of Ants...

Do you hold any other band or artist to the same standard, and therefore expectations, as you do DMB?

This could potentially be its own thread, but I thought I'd start here...

No. DMB is really my favorite band of all time. It's them, and then a handful of 2nd tier favorites, artists I've seen live multiple times, have all or most of their albums, another like 3rd tier that's a lot wider/broader but maybe haven't seen more than once or ever or they're defunct/from another time.

I hold DMB to the standards they set for themselves. And they set that bar pretty damn high. I still think they put on the best performance out there and are highly regarded in the music world for doing so. Dave is well respected even by the up and coming musicians. And though I'm on some other music forums/sub forums, none are devoted to a singular act.

That being said, DMB are not the same band from the late 90's-early 2000's and I don't hold them to THAT. Though, the last few years have been up there in best shows I've seen of all time, just saying, but I'm not going in with those expectations and in fact have been blown away that I am thinking that while the show is happening. Like, Holy shit, this might be the best Gorge show I've ever been too out of 18 over 15 different years and it's 2023..

Sure, watching and comparing setlists on the internet can get stale, but that's always been the case. When a show is played live in real time for me and the people around me, it's a fucking great time.

It's kind of weird, I remember feeling at my first couple shows in 2000 and 2001, that I'd already missed the bands best days. People were like, oh you should have seen them in 97 man wooowww, this is just different. Every year has more or less had that same vibe ever since from the general DMB fan.

No but the standard I hold them to, unique sets and peformances, is also what literally sets DMB apart and makes them special as my favorite band. If they deviate from unique sets each night and spontaneity and instead move towards playing the same songs in the same spots each night and canned performances it literally is putting them closer to in the pack with a lot of other bands that I like their music just fine but have no reason to see 20+ times and multiple stops in the same tour like I do DMB.

If anyone is looking for a good show to listen to this fine Friday, I would recommend checking out 8/20/04 (Woodlands). Grab the 3 mic mix taped by Matt Hiles. It pretty much sounds like a soundboard and the band sounds great as usual for 2004.
