Dave Matthews Band drummer Carter Beauford’s instructional VHS tape Under the Table and Drumming
Rostam: I grew up in D.C., so Dave Matthews Band were the hometown heroes. They were part of everybody’s culture in that part of the Mid-Atlantic in the ’90s. I bought Under the Table and Dreaming in fifth grade and learned how to play “Crash Into Me” on acoustic guitar and then transcribed it for piano. I saw them three times by the time I was 17, and I never saw them again.
I had this instructional tape when I was 15, and it planted some seeds in my brain that have been growing ever since. In the last few years I rewatched it on YouTube and realized how Carter Beauford has inspired all of my drum-part writing across every record that I’ve been a part of. The way he looks at writing drum parts is fundamentally about groove but also unlike any other drummer. There’s a lot for everybody to learn from him.
