Go! It's awesome. If you don't do jazz fest, check out French Quarter fest. It's free and just has 100's of bands all over the city on stages outside and in. Less people than Jazz fest and more of regional local thing. You won't see DMB, but you will see Kermit Ruffins, Freddy King Jr, Big Mike, etc..
It truly is my favorite city. If you love music, food, art and awesome people there's nowhere like it. It's pretty affordable if you airbnb with friends instead of do the hotel thing.
Don't, I repeat, Don't go to spend time on Bourbon Street. Look at it. Walk across it. See for yourself why you should not spend time there, and then enjoy the rest of the amazing things the city has to offer.
I would also recommend going to the first weekend of jazz fest and not the second. It offers more local acts, less crowds and generally just more laid back than the 2nd weekend which features more national headlining acts. The first weekend typically still does the MAIN headliner on Saturday night though.
I could not live there because of weather, crime, insanely high murder rate and political corruption, but it is my favorite American city to visit.
