"[Matthews] bucked apartheid strictures, too, like a teenage punk. As he once told Spin, he’d lift his Black friends and physically carry them into segregated businesses. 'See, they’re not touching the floor,' he’d say, taunting the staff, 'so they’re not really here.'"

I don't know that I'd ever heard that before, but that is and

Release that Hollywood Bowl show as an LT!

I’ve been reading Pitchfork for so long and it’s kind of surreal to see them pick Crash for their Sunday review. Great read overall!! I think it highlighted to me how “extra” Pitchfork’s writing can be too

Always nice to see them get some appreciation like this. Glad the author covered those dickwad critics in the 90s who unfairly shat on the band so aggressively. But like he points out too, the band has done just fine.

"But as college began, I fell for the false binary these critics framed—you couldn’t simultaneously like the Dave Matthews Band and “serious music.” It took the better part of two decades for me to realize I’d been posing, that the Dave Matthews Band could also count as serious music."

I remember this as a hard fact when I got to college. Luckily I never cared if anyone thought I had bad taste in music so I embraced my DMB fandom.

It is true too; something happened around 2018 (ironically when Come Tomorrow came out) where it no longer became an indictment of your musical taste if you liked DMB.

All these Pitchfork bros were listening to DMB back in 1996, but they were too ashamed to admit it.

I feel like we should credit the writer too for never once bringing up the Chicago poop incident even though P4K is a Chicago-based publication.

I think the Tiny Desk concert and going on Stern were two of the best things that CT did for Dave Matthews. It made a lot of people realize that Dave is still an awesome musician and human being

That interview where he pretty much highlighted how much he dislikes some of his fans really helped. People have liked DMB all along, they've always been the "alternative" artist that they know they SHOULD like, they just recognize that the people they don't like ALSO like them. For Dave to kinda come out and say "hey I'm one of you too, I don't understand these drunk guys either" definitely endeared him to that crowd a bit.

This is a contributing factor for sure. For years, you couldn't bring up the subject of DMB in Chicago without people going "Oh, that band that pooped over the bridge?"

This is also why DMB gets so much hate from white hipster music critics, and why we get obvious trolls on these boards. DMB has always been about friendship and diversity, a multi-racial band preaching love. And the racists f***ing hate that shit, lol.

If you haven't noticed it off-and-on around here over the years, you weren't paying attention.

Would love this but I'd be surprised if it happened. Maron has made it very clear in his act what he thinks of DMB, and it is... not favorable haha. He's a pro interviewer though so I'm sure he could put that shit aside.

Ah, Pitchfork. Taking 'it's cool to hate loudly what we want and condescend' mentality to the next level.

They lost me at quoting Christgau. The dude was a breath of fresh air being bitchy about it all at the turn of the '80s reviewing for the Village Voice; by the end of that decade he was just being a shit because he could and that's what was expected.

Man. I know a lot of people love him but I absolutely cannot stand Maron and hearing that he takes shots at DMB in his act doesn’t help. What a shithead.

I mean, worse shots have been taken. Essentially the "joke" I saw him do (and he was workshopping it at the time, it wasn't a fully formed bit) was "The Trepidation of the Dave Matthews fan" where he talks about being in line at a Starbucks and witnessing an instance where the barista asked the customer what they were up to and the customer responds they're going to a concert that night. When the barista asked who the customer was seeing, Maron saw the trepidation in the guy being unsure about how the barista would react to the news that it was Dave Matthews Band--which I thought was funny because that is DEFINITELY something I've experienced when having to tell people who I'm going to see haha. At least here in Los Angeles where everyone is too cool for school.

He then went on to say he just doesn't get the appeal of the music, and he's tried. Then he makes fun of every fan whose immediate response is "But you GOTTA admit they're all insanely talented musicians" which -- again, has been my response to people who don't like them fairly often haha.

Obviously not A+ material, but just saying he wasn't taking hard shots at the band.

True, but he's also had on a number of people who he's had personal grudges with over the years. I think he doesn't like DMB because it's not his style and it's cool to hate on them in his circle. But I think an interview between the two of them could be interesting, I think Maron would come out of it surprised at how much he likes him plus it would be eye opening to hear just how much of his past and his personal struggles Dave is willing to open up about. Maron is great with that kinda stuff, and I think it would be interesting.
