New Music Documentary on Woodstock ‘99

Just watched the trailer and there’s a short little clip of Dave and Boyd on stage. I’m sure DMB won’t be highly profiled in this since they definitely didn’t contribute to the insanity and absolute riotous chaos that took place there, but nonetheless good to see they at least made the trailer! Comes out on HBO Max later this month.

I must have dodged something when I was there. I remember the bulk of the attitude being from how expensive everything was, and then how fucking hot it was. Outside of that I don’t really recall that much rage for 4 days. Clearly I was wrong.

I was 11 when this happened, but my memories from that time are that it only got bad when Limp Bizkit started. After watching the trailer, i'm assuming i'm completely wrong.

It seems that’s the narrative they’re going at with it. It, to me, felt that something was building and when the festival just ‘ended’ then people got pissed and more stupid than they already were. All weekend we heard ‘rumors’ of a GnR reunion, the Rolling Stone or The Who or some such thing so they got themselves all worked up when it simply ended. I believe there was a great deal of entitlement at the end and it was all poorly run and super expensive and stupid hot out but I dunno, the narrative that they’re pushing with that trailer at least doesn’t mesh at all with what I and my friends experienced that weekend.

I was there with a press pass for a local newspaper... Camped out in a tent in the press area which was mostly empty. I only lasted a few days, was extremely dehydrated and hungry and just wanted to get the hell out of the sun went home exhausted and got super sick in bed for a few days.

Missed my chance to see the band in the press area due to all the disorganization and lack of planning. The entire area is completely clean these days of any remnants of the event - for the longest time there were a few buildings out on the tarmac painted up with part of the Woodstock guitar logo but those have been gone for a while now.

I live(d) about 10 miles from the event grounds and I'm often out at the base for my cycling club race events where to this day I bake in the sun in the middle of the summer...

For the few days I was on site thing seemed like a pretty normal festival concert... got there Thursday afternoon - can't remember if I left Friday or Saturday - I did listen to DMB and remember not staying the day after that. and I only live(d) 10 miles away.

Rage festival or not, that is still one of my favorite DMB sets of all time. That's my favorite #41, and am also partial to that Two Step and Watchtower. My first concert video of the band was the Woodstock set on VHS. My little brother's friend taped the whole weekend on VHS and had to run two VCR's to snag DMB's set onto another VHS for me. I had to wait two weeks for it LOL

I played that tape more times than I can count. At the time, I was a young drummer in high school, and there was no YouTube in 1999, so having that tape was my first chance to really study Carter's playing style. I would watch the tape, see something that blew my mind and then run down to the basement to try and copy what he did. One time I pretended to be sick and stayed home from school to watch the Woodstock set and play my drums!

I left early Sunday afternoon. I loved seeing so many bands that i loved. I did not really connect too much with the crowd that was there to be honest. It was an experience. Can't say it was that much fun but again i enjoyed the music.

Given that you could still get a bottled water or Coke out of a machine for about $.50 in 1999, $4 was a lot of money for water. I remember hearing about the price of water and food back then and being blown away by the cost.

It would be about $6.45 per unit today. That’s more than any bottle of water I’ve ever paid for. And at a festival where everyone needs water and is out in the sun for 12 hours, that’s pretty bad.

Oh it was a joke, because that seems standard for water at venues these days. If not higher.

Looking at the lineup, and holy shit every band ever was there. I mean if you were relevant in 1999 you were there.

Last Kiss was pretty big but PJ wasn't doing shit in '99 and most certainly not playing a US festival but you know that. If by chance they did attend and then Roskilde occurred that surely may have been the end.

When the Chili Peppers set ended and everyone realized that was going to be it, people were pissed at that point cuz nothing ‘special’ happened. Rumors were a GnR reunion, or the Stones or The Who or whatever but obviously it was nothing. That’s when I started thinking people were going to get stupid. Me and my friends left and got to Utica, had dinner and couple of us got dropped off at the greyhound bus station. My bus wasn’t leaving for a while and they delivered the papers while we waited and the front page of the USA Today was the festival burning. A lot of shit happened after the last note of music which tainted the weekend as a whole. However the actual weekend had issues but not a constant stream of acts of aggression.

It was awful on so many levels. The best thing my friends and I did was escape in the middle of night 2. Original Camping area we got was basically a rock pile. After having to move our tent from a growing pond of shit and piss (which people walked through) bc toilets and showers backed up, we got a nicer place with wood chips but the heat, lack of water and other necessities got to us. I was comfy on my couch cheering along when the riots started and that place was burned to the ground.

Edit: 4$ water might not sound bad but combine that with 120 degree real feel of temp bc this was held on an old army concrete runway in the middle of the summer with zero shade and the "free" water stations not working, it was criminal.

I don't know why but for some reason I seem to remember water being more than the four dollars they said it was. I do remember it being disgusting with those sewage swamps being massive. I don't really know what they expected to happen having limp bisket and rage essentially headline a "peace" festival. There was a point during that Saturday night lineup, i told my friends we should leave. It was the most unsafe ive ever felt at a concert, and Hartford is my home venue.I remember walking around on Sunday and they were passing out the peace candles, I still have mine in the attic, and thought this is going to end just so badly. Im actually surprised it didn't turn out worse.
