The only downside to that '08 tour was the amount of covers they were playing, but overall I agree, those June '08 shows got me fired UP and really ready to see the band. Unfortunately I moved to KC that summer and had to sell my tickets to the OKC show so I missed them that summer.

08 was my first tour and unfortunately Crew Stadium and Riverbend didn't happen until after Roi's accident.

Riverbend 08 is still one of the craziest concert experiences I have ever had.

it's the unpopular opinion thread so I'll let fly again my oft-repeated take that I really don't think 04 was that great. certainly better than everything that came after but I think the dropoff from 03 to 04 was close to as bad as the one from 04 to 05

Hard disagree for me. 04 is the last year this band sounded like themselves, were playing great sets, and had some interesting new material to road test.

Edit: Here's been the secret pattern for this band since 04 - play some interesting new songs mixed with classics the year before a major release, release a less than stellar, sometimes a total turd of an album, tour behind that album enthusiastically while the fans groan. Next year, come back with substantially less songs from the latest release and the fans are happy. The year after that they shake off even more of those songs and start adding new stuff to road test, rinse and repeat.

I'm guessing it ultimately comes down to how you feel about the 04 songs. personally I think they range from mediocre (joyride, sometimes hello again) to downright bad (sugar will, crazy easy)

Love Joyride. Hello Again, Crazy Easy, Sugar Will, & Good Good Time all had their moments and were interesting. Especially Sugar Will.

Also loved the tightness of the band. Really solid performances and energy. Dave's voice was also at it's arguable best in 04.

Yeah I love the 2004 songs. SW is probably the best guitar rift Dave has made post 2000. How the fuck did he come up with that? SW in 2004 is pure dmb. Unfortunately, the song is a shell of its former self

The rest of them are great too and Joyride, Hello again, and Crazy Easy are still great in the current line up.

I’m sure back in 2004 it wasn’t ideal getting all 4 or 5 of the new songs each night, but when you look back it’s great. That year aged really well. Anytime any of those songs gets played these days it’s a treat.

Something about the bands paying was also really sharp in 2004. That was peak butch dmb. They started to get real stale shorty after. Fast forward to 2007 and they just sounded flat to me.

    Very hot take:

Wednesday’s live stream (7.30.03) is an overall better 2003 show then Central Park. Central Parks set is weak for that year honesty. Central Park benefits from displaying The band on its biggest stage. They were playing in front of 100,000 or so people in one of the most iconic park in the world, in one of the most iconic cities in the world. That’s why Central Park is good. Side by side comparison without all the extra that comes with CP, 7.30.03 blows it out of the water. These performances on 7.30.03 are also pretty great to me. Always thought this was one of the best live traxs. You got to ask yourself this question: would you rather be at 7.30.03 or 9.24.03 if both shows were payed at average amphitheater’s?

CP has a substantially better mix than lt26. CP's setlist isn't a standout from that tour but the performances that night were nearly perfect. And of course Cortez with Warren just puts it over the top.

a dream so real is a top 20 DMB song and could have potentially been a top 10 studio track if paired with the right producer.

Seek Up is actually one of my favorite songs, but I’m not huge on an 18-20 minute song in the opening slot. I think openers need to be to the point—either a song that gets an instant positive crowd reaction (like Granny) or something that builds the energy (like Squirm or OSW) but only enough to give you a real good taste, but not so long that you lose interest.

An exception would be a ~12 minute #41, which is starting to push the limits on length but it’s a great enough song that it’s forgivable.

Summer '07 was such a mess of a tour, reflective of the state of the band I suppose.
I saw five shows in June '08 with 6.21 still incredible to think about.
