I don't think there are many pros to Notre Dame remaining independent so I don't include that in my calculus of the position they are in. Agreed those days are numbered. I think they are in an amazing position in that anyone will take them and they are at zero risk of being left behind.
Again, assuming their football media rights aren't forfeit to them for the next 14 years.
EDIT: I didn't respond to your second point. A lot of people are taking the (very real) elite nature of Freeman's recruiting game and prematurely applying it to both his gameday coaching ability and to his current roster.
If he's the real deal I think next year's game against Ohio State will be a lot of fun, but I am in no way getting my hopes up for this year.
