Does the Pac 12 start shopping from the newly assembled XII to pick off a couple of their schools? Baylor, OkState, BYU?

None of this really matters in the long run - when the top 64 schools or so will break off from the NCAA.

I am REALLY REALLY glad Nebraska secured their place in the Big 10 twelve years ago. Cause with Texas/OU and now USC/UCLA making moves, I do not want to be on the outside looking in.

I think the Big 10 needs to look at the following teams, and also get rid of Rutgers to get to 20: Washington, Oregon, Stanford, Cal, ND

if ND joins a conference for football it has to be the ACC, at least until 2036--or the ACC ceases to exist, whichever happens first

Can we just get it over with already and have the top 40-50 schools just exit the NCAA and make their own league. That's what we're hurdling towards anyway.

I wouldn't be sure about this at all.

You absolutely have to at least kick the tires on conference membership with USC, Michigan, and Ohio State. ND already gives up tv money for its independence compared to what it could have in a conference but the national footprint and still having access to playoffs has been worth it. Now they can get a national footprint in a conference, and eventually this consolidation is going to put playoff access at stake for and independent Notre Dame, so I think their hand is pretty close to being forced.

ND - and the other premier schools in the ACC - are in a really bad position now. I just kind of think the top 60 / 64 / whatever the number is - should just leave the NCAA for football - and start their own league. Maybe 4 "conferences" of 16, each with 2 divisions.

It's unclear to me how bad of a position Notre Dame is in - I think it depends on if their grant of rights with the ACC extends to their football rights, which I saw a rumor yesterday that it may not. If that's the case Notre Dame's in an amazing position.

Wouldn't say amazing, but it would be better. At some point - maybe not until the top schools breakaway - ND isn't going to be independent (unless they don't care about the playoff). On a related note, I was reading some ND blogs yesterday and today to see their writers/fans views of all this, and seemingly a surprising amount of supporters think ND has a really good chance of beating Ohio State, and that outside of skill positions, ND has equal or better talent vs Ohio State.

I don't think there are many pros to Notre Dame remaining independent so I don't include that in my calculus of the position they are in. Agreed those days are numbered. I think they are in an amazing position in that anyone will take them and they are at zero risk of being left behind.

Again, assuming their football media rights aren't forfeit to them for the next 14 years.

EDIT: I didn't respond to your second point. A lot of people are taking the (very real) elite nature of Freeman's recruiting game and prematurely applying it to both his gameday coaching ability and to his current roster.

If he's the real deal I think next year's game against Ohio State will be a lot of fun, but I am in no way getting my hopes up for this year.

ND isn't getting left behind, unless they want to - that's true. But the arrogant remaining independent attitude many of your former Domers exhibit is going to go bye bye.

Also, we didn't even talk about Lloyd Carr's grandson - 5 star QB - commuting to ND. That's an enjoyable story.

ND's other viable option isn't independence IMO but kicking around to try to stabilize and add to the ACC to make it a third power. But I'm not sure there's enough power programs left with a national footprint to make that viable. Some Big 12 dregs and Oregon/Washington? With USC, Michigan and Ohio State in the B1G it seems the much more likely option.

The ACC has those schools TV $$ for a while, but they aren't going to be able to compete with the $$ the Big 10 and SEC give their schools. Again, all of this fun but meaningless.....these schools are going to leave the NCAA..at least for football. I do wonder when that happens, is it going to be just for football or for all sports.

I'm curious if we ever go in the other direction and get a team kicked out of a superconference because they aren't meeting the quality of play aimed for. Like, Vanderbilt is safe because of a deal they struck in 1932 that had entirely to do with where they were physically located geographically, and now they are in a better position than a whole lot of schools who have had a lot more sporting success in multiple sports. If we are going all in with superconferences do we start taking that by its true definition with regards to quality of play?

They need teams like Vandy and Michigan to take some losses.

I agree with this. At some point ND is going to have to make a choice on a conference.

If they join the ACC I think that elevates the ACC to a 3rd power conference and then the 3 conferences split up the Big 12/Pac 12

If they join the Big 10, I think the ACC/Big-Pac12 all die and we're at two big conference.

Looks like Big 12 is reaching out to PAC-12 remnants - Arizona schools, Colorado, Utah, Washington, Oregon.

Have to think Oregon and Washington try to stick it out for B1G.

Not thrilled with the idea of traveling to Orlando, Salt Lake City, Ames, Morgantown, and Eugene in the same season.

Yeah sure but it's a chance to solidify yourself as the third power.

Big 12 is in a unique position in that they don't really have any schools in their current portfolio that are at much risk of being poached by the SEC or B1G anytime soon, so they can sort of just go on the offensive with nothing to lose. ACC and PAC-12 have to maintain a bit more of defensive postures.

If Big 12 proactively gets ahold of a bunch of PAC 12 schools then it's pretty easy to see the ACC just being cherry picked by the SEC and B1G (assuming the GOR thing can be navigated somehow) and the Big 12 essentially being the next best thing.

I'm thrilled they're actually being proactive and would be beyond happy if we got all six to join, however, the travel would be a killer.

Yeah and the logistics for like, a midweek lacrosse game are just baffling. It feels like it would be in everyone's best interest to just treat football and basketball differently as far as conference affiliation goes.
