Wacthed 2001: A Space Odyssey for the first time in a very long time last night. Visually stunning, but utterly baffling.

Aaron Sorkin is a shitty writer when he doesn’t have people to funnel his dribble into something workable. The extended trailer on Netflix killed all my excitement for it.

Anyone seen Something Wicked This Way Comes? I remember it scaring the crap out of me when I was kid but I haven’t watched in over 30 years. Something about a carnival coming to town.

No. But I remember starting the Bradbury book a long time ago before I got distracted. He has a unique way of writing - lots of metaphor - so I sometimes must be in the right frame of mind.

Love Ray Bradbury Theater though. And his short story, The Lake, is one of my all-time favourites.

The October Game is one hell of a creepy story, too.

In fact, I think he is best with his shorter fiction.

I saw it for the first time a few years ago, and although I think it's a worthwhile watch for this time of year, it's not particularly scary for adults.

It Follows- they actually did a fantastic job building tension in the first 30 minutes, when you don’t know what “it” is. Really enjoyed their veiling on the thing. I know some people found it boring, but it’s just the creepiest idea if you think about it.

Event Horizon- I’m always surprised at how violent and disturbing this is, a Halloween favorite despite not feeling like a Halloween movie.

Now I’m on to Trick R Treat, Evil Dead, and Creepshow, my usual Halloween favorites.

Just watched Slaughterhouse Five, and the one vibe I got watching this movie was 2001-like.

    8/10

I'm not sure what to say, but it is definitely going to be memorable. Haven't read the book either, had just heard of it. Loved all the time skipping, I guess I just wish it was contained to the guys normal life on Earth. The weird alien planet thing w the actress zonked it into another plane for me.

The Dresden stuff was top notch. The older dad war buddy guy was such a likeable actor. He stood out big for me.

As anti-war as it is proclaimed, knowing what actually happened in Germany at the close of the war, this was pure kids gloves.

It Follows and Event Horizon, fantastic.

Event Horizon is one of my faves and legit one of the scariest movies I’ve ever seen. It just sucks the 3rd act ALMOST ruins it.

i actually just finished reading the book a few weeks ago, then had to dig for the movie and only found a shitty youtube version. if it's streaming for free anywhere, i missed it or don't have the app. ray bradbury theater is free on amazon prime streaming, i believe.

agreed that the movie won't scratch any horror itches, but it's definitely appropriate for the season. some cheesy effects and its not a particularly exciting movie, but watching a younger jonathan pryce as the illustrated man was fun.

about bradbury's writing, one of my favorite parts of the book was that after a notably longer chapter that had a lot of things happening in it, the following chapter was one sentence long: "nothing much else happened, all the rest of that night." i got a good chuckle out of that. a little self-awareness in the writing there, i think, while also serving the plot in that despite all of those events life went on in the town as usual.

I might be wrong, but I thought I remember the original cut was longer with more of the hell scenes, and they cut it down to make it more....palatable.

I would also love to see an extended version.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Borat 2 was funny. Not in the same league as the first, but that's a ridiculously high bar. They were a little limited because they couldn't do as much hidden camera/candid moments with unsuspecting strangers. A lot of it was staged with actors. Lots of great satire though.
