Shotgun versus Blue Water

Thematically, both songs cover the same subject. Which song is better.

Never really thought blue water and shotgun were the same thematically. Shotgun I always saw as like a guy (or a mom/dad) finding that his girlfriend or wife has killed herself and him asking like why didn’t she just talk to him (literally). I know this isn’t every version but I think the concrete lyrics it’s had since 2007 kinda portray this. I guess I never really thought about or understood what blue water is about which is weird. I love that song so much. Now that I think of it is it about someone cutting themselves lol? I don’t even know.

although Blue Water in 2018 full band I am all for

Good songs on both accounts. I think I'd have a preference for Shotgun and that is primarily due to the combination of Dave's screaming and the syncopation of the horns. Good topic for a thread!

Love blue water, it is like an acid trip combined with a connection to nature. The wetland version '96 with Warren Hayes is one of my all time favorites.

    Re: Shotgun versus Blue Water

I have always loved the simplicity of Blue Water. The lyrics are great, and the melody is awesome. It's a track Boyd can really breathe on, so that's a major plus. If you have never heard it, the version from the DMBLive series is really great, from the Bayou show. Boyd yells at a guy in the crowd lol, it's pretty funny. Also on the Forever Moore compilation there is a really good version. Shotgun I guess I would lean more towards as a what I would listen to first kind of thing, but it always depends on mood. That 2007 sampler version is just out of this world. The guitar riff, the whole band jamming away. It's great. Tough choice

An early shotgun might beat a later blue water, but all the early blue waters were incredible. Love the '95 version with Boyd's extended solo.

    Re: Shotgun versus Blue Water

    Both great, fairly different themes.

However, Shotgun's riff [+ the introduction of the Gryphon] is one of Dave's greatest. Which is no hyperbole. The Pink Floyd/existential vibe of BW is in a class of its own within DMB's catalogue but is for sure an outlier. Shotgun's riff and arrangement, on the other hand, is quintessential 2006 DMB and is unmistakably a favorite of his.

That said, my hope and dream was that Shotgun's debut on 6.10.06 would follow the same trajectory as Blue Water and become the epic emotional explosion that I know it can be. It never quite fully realized that dream and for that I will never forgive it. While the intro/bridge /chorus instrumentation is gorgeous and I love it, I never really found that it matched the weight and the tone of the main riff and it for sure changed the whole vibe of the song.

I don't know why I decided to unearth these ancient opinions of Shotgun on this random ass Tuesday morning but here we are.

2006 shogun overall but blue water jam kicks the shit out of anything shotgun has done

shotgun has regressed with each preformance. i've heard it just about every year it was played and it's only gotten worse and worse. one of the most overrated songs in the catalogue

This 2017 review breaks my heart. It's correct but it's sad to see Shotgun and "overrated" in the same sentence

which version? just curious which is your favorite. I saw it in 2012 twice. but still for me personally, the 07 sampler reigns supreme.

on the topic - Shotgun for me for sure, for the riff, drums, horn lines, lyrics etc etc etc (it's top 10 for me) but I can see why people love BW

Best shotgun is Hershey 2012, most solid and cohesive lyrics with some epic wailing. Best blue water is LT20. I would put either version on par with each other.

Most certainly referring to the 2012 performance from Hershey, PA... on the AFTW Bonus DVD
