One could probably fairly effectively argue he was more right leaning than left, but the modern equivalents of the right-wing were busy burning his effigy, not putting him on ballots, and going to war.

It's the hypocrisy of the right...big government is bad, unless it's us regulating female reproductive rights, restructuring the tax code/laws so that the rich pay less taxes based on earnings and corporations can avoid them almost completely based on the notion of job creation, or a myriad of other BS they keep selling to their base.

A flat tax scares the hell out of the rich and corporations, but no one has really ever come up a reason why it's bad...outside of the rich clinging to the laughable notion of the trickle down theory or corporations threatening to downsize and export jobs (see how this can be addressed in the previous paragraph).

The adage of "you've got to spend money to make money" has gone out the window. The new notion is figuring how to increase profits without spending any extra money, or really it's more about shuffling the money. Cutting benefits, lay-offs/"downsizing", and job exportation frees up money to pursue other initiatives while minimizing new spending and potentially eliminating the perception of loses (especially if the initiatives fail). Board members and shareholders seeing workers and the middle class as something less than pawns...

Taxes have never been an issue for me, it's what they're being spent on that bothers me...even more than the richest people and corporations paying far less than their equitable share. I'll gladly pay more for universal healthcare, better education, environmental care/climate change initiatives, infrastructure renewal and maintenance, more pay for first responders (and better selection and training for our police forces), and more. Paying more so the rich can pay less, funding military expansion and acts of war, continuing to give politicians raises, paying for the health insurance of politicians, regulating reproductive healthcare, gutting departments vital to our nation...these are all things that can eat bags of dicks (or shit, depending on which makes them most uncomfortable).

I grew up in Westchester county in NY, guido started as term of referring to the kids of Italian heritage BY the Italian kids...at least as far we heard it. But in general usage in Westchester, it was a style thing. I knew all sorts of caucasians that adapted the style and referred to themselves as guidos. A certain amount of these folks were assholes and when we called them guidos it was as a dig...suburban white trash of sorts and again spanned many western (and some eastern) European heritages/ethnicities. We had hispanic and latino guidos, Irish guidos, Asian guidos...no black guidos though. The black kids in my jhs and HS years had their own cooler (to me) style.

I remember being blown away when the "guidos" started having issues with Albanians...every aspect of their style and behavior was far more alike than different. Same clothes, cars, music, hair, jewelry, etc.

Also the girls that were part of this group were referred to as guidettes. So where I grew up (and when, graduated HS in 1990), it was a style/click. Not dissimilar to jocks and burnouts or the Greasers and Mods of old. There was no shame or offense unless you meant it and it was clear you were looking for a fight.

I cannot, however, speak for how this term was viewed by the generations prior to or after mine. But I don't think most Gen Xers view it as a term prejudicial, either by those that were guidos or those that viewed them as such.

I think Jersey Shore did a lot of damage in making it "OK" to say.

The short answer about the bolded is it's complicated. Human beings are complex. But I think a person can be. Self-hatred takes a lot of shapes.

But is it a racist word? If there's 10 Italian-Americans and nine of them say it's racist but you don't, who gets the final say? I think there's definitely a sizable number of Italian-Americans who see it as a slur.

It's a word you might think about giving a rest. Even if you maintain that it's not racist, you're still not intending it as a compliment.
