A Jazzfest or this new Sound on Sound Festival fit DMB much better than Boston Calling. So if they aren't doing Jazzfest it wouldn't make much sense for DMB to do Boston Calling.

I tend to disagree with your top post. Foo Fighters are headlining this year and Rage Against the Machine was slated to headline. Those are not college bands. Tool, The Killers, Mumford, all are recent previous headliners - not college bands.
Second bolded really seems like a stretch. They won't play Boston Calling b/c they aren't playing Jazz Fest? Maybe Jazz Fest timing did not work...or maybe, as I suspect, they aren't playing Jazz Fest b/c they just played it in 2019. I'm shocked so many people expected them to be on the bill again after just 3 years (really only two b/c there was no 2020 Jazz Fest).
