Funny thing is after a couple weeks of below freezing temps and a couple small snow storms it’s 50 and raining now with 25-30mph wind gusts. I unfortunately am seeing leaves again!

    Re: Lawncare/Landscape Thread

I signed up to have my fertilizing and weed control done for me this year for the first time after having done it on my own since we moved into this house 5 years ago. Milorganite is $18 per bag around here now. A few years ago it was like $7 per bag. It's only going to cost me $4 more per application to have a service fertilize for me and they ALSO include weed, crab grass, and grub control on top of the fertilization in the cost. I normally have to spend another $100 or so for the weed control product I used on my own on top of the fertilizing cost. So not only is it cheaper to have someone else do this for me, but I don't have to spend any of my time or labor either. I liked having the control to do it on my own and was proud of the results, but damn it's just not worth it anymore. I'm very curious to see what kind of results they get as far as weed control and such.

That's the way to do it! I had my company aerate, overseed, fert, etc. starting back in Sept/Oct. I think last year I started to see results around March, so we'll see.

Kinda bummed me out seeing this thread. Haven't had to do anything in a while but you reminded me that late-winter maintenance won't be long from now, mainly trimming all my crepe myrtles.

It's hard to argue when it costs as much to do it on my own, plus my time and energy on top of that, as it does for them to do it for me. Don't worry, I'll still be doing my mowing and edging.

That reminds me of my neighbor. When they had their first kid he was always out in the yard doing yard work. When his second kid showed up the yard took a noticeable back seat for a couple years. Even our other neighbor noticed how much less he was out doing yard work after the second kid.

AT&T has been installing fiber in our neighborhood for a few weeks. There's currently a guy waist-deep in a hole in the middle of my front yard near the curb. Hope it gets put back together nicely.

Did my "late-winter" round of crepe myrtle and rose bush trimming this weekend, at least in the front yard. Gotta do a few more things in the back yard this weekend. Then spray for weeds. First mow won't be far behind.

Just starting to see some bulbs start to break through the mulch. Love this time of year and watching the progress of my plants/flowers throughout the spring.

My backyard is in a bit of rough shape. Half of it is technically on wetlands and it’s pretty shady, so getting my backyard to match my immaculate front has always been a huge challenge. But I’ve had some success in the past so I know I can do it. Thinking about bringing in anywhere from 5-10 yards of topsoil and spreading it in some lower areas and then reseeding the entire thing. If I do it soon, it’ll be early enough for the grass to get some solid sun exposure and establish before the trees fill in with leaves in early to mid May.

I’m also gonna need like 10-12 yards of mulch this year after we added so many new flower and plant bed areas throughout the year last year. That’s like my favorite project though so I’m really looking forward to it. Couple more weeks until that goes down. Can’t wait!

Damn, the warm weather really crept up quickly. Need to check the soil temps and start throwing down soon.

edit: According to greencastonline, temps went from 44 to 64 in two days.

My yard is a pond, everything is melting but the ground is frozen. It’s no wonder everyone around here gives up on trying to make a nice looking lawn.

I don't even know how that would be possible to go up that fast. I would recommend you get your own soil thermometer to keep track of it yourself.

Getting geared up for spring! Have milorganite ready for the lawn. What is everyone using for pre? I always use scotts annual plan and have never been disappointed but curious what y'all use.

I actually just applied my pre yesterday, Lesco Stonewall 0-0-7 from Lowe's. My soil temp in NJ was around 50-53, it's been a steady light rain all day so that couldn't have worked any better.

This is the stuff I used for several years after doing a lot of research (I provided two different links because the big variance in pricing, but I think the shipping costs are much different between the two stores). I would have used it again this year, but I'm hiring out the herbicide and fertilizer for the first time this year to see how that goes. It works well, but with granular it's always hard to get it applied to the curb edges of the lawn.

Alright, gonna mix it up this year and have some fun. Switching from Scotts to Lesco products to see how it goes. Will also mix in milorganite like I always do.

Early Spring - I usually apply around end of march, give or take a week or two

    https://www.homedepot.com/p/LESCO-50...0311/100185665

Spring/Early May - Lay on the fert. Do you guys usually lay down phosphorus with you fert? One bag has it and one doesn't.

I'm no expert, but i'll give my opinions on the plan, which i think is a good one as i solely use Lesco and Milorganite for my lawn. For the Pre-emergent, i would not get the one you have listed, that one has Nitrogen in it, i would get the Lesco Pre (Stonewall) from Lowe's which is a 0-0-7 and probably 1/2 the cost. As for the fert, i would only put down option 2. Lesco Turf Fert is by far my favorite product from them. You'll see a great improvement in your lawn right away. Good luck!!

I haven't used Milo in a couple of years, it's gotten too expensive. When I go organic, I buy Lawn Restore off of Amazon, or sometimes Home Depot has its own version in stock.

I believe Phosphorus isn't really needed unless you've done a soil test on your lawn to know you need it.

Grabbed the Lesco Stonewall 0-0-7 and the Lesco Turf Fert 24-0-11 today.

Spreading the prodiamine in the next week or so and we're off to the races.

Did a little weed control today and noticed I'm probably gonna have to mow at least the back yard, maybe even tomorrow. It looks patchy from a distance (my deck) but those patches were getting pretty long.

    Re: Lawncare/Landscape Thread

Just put down Lesco Stonewall 0-0-7. I used an application rate of 4lbs/1000 sq ft. Might get to the store and get milorganite and throw it all down today. Suppose to rain the next two days straight and that would be awesome for all of this.

Lawn mower is ready to go.

Have a landscaper coming today to quote a new paver patio. Have needed to get the old one redone and expanded for years now. Finally doing it.
