I wanted to know how to play a guitar. It's been a year since I started playing a guitar. I learn guitar from myself. I just watched some videos and books as my referral. I am so happy that I am part of this thread. thanks for the information guys. I will look forward learning from all of you here.

    Hello....................

There are no "easy" ways to learn to play. If it was truly easy to play guitar, everyone would do it.

Most people who start out to learn guitar expecting it to be easy end up quitting after a few weeks when they realize that its a lot harder than they imagined. It comes as a great disappointment to some people to realize that they're NOT going to learn the basics in a month and be ready to join a rock band or perform in public in 3 months or whatever........

It can take years of concentrated practice and careful effort to get really good on guitar. Even if all you want is to learn a handful of chords so you can strum along to songs like "Kum-Ba-Yah" around the summer camp bonfire, it can take months, depending on how much time you're willing to put into practicing every day.

Hey guys, sorry for being gone so long. These past few months I've been pretty busy but I'll probably be back to doing lessons again soon once I'm done with my day job and start school again. I already covered majority of the basics, but I think I'll start to go into more detailed stuff soon for those that want it.

I've been teaching myself for the better part of 5 or 6 years now. I still feel like I suck, but those times when all of the sudden you can play a new song that you've been trying at forever make it all worth it.

I am finally figuring out the main LIOG riffs. And it's so awesome.

i have been teaching myself for 2 years and i have just started working on LIOG for the last few weeks, i love the riff...im obsessed with it. the hard part for me is during the chorus breakdown when boyd plays...daves pattern is pretty aggressive

There are, but most cost money. A lot of the free lessons are great but they don't really go too into depth. There's already a TON of material on that subject matter that I've posted into this thread. Feel free to read! If you have any questions too let me know.

I know, I feel like I suck at it, but it is seriously the funnest shit to play with. The part where it breaks down and goes from the riff to the part with the slide in it... SO fun. I put on LT7 and rock with Bela on the jam real hard.

umm. a really good guitar i can suggest is something like a takamine or DX Martins. they are really good guitars, they just arent solid bodies making that deep tone. but they are good to learn on and once you get better and start paying attention to tone and depth, you can go to a solid body.

the problem is that i've never had any formal lessons except for the basics which i've learned online. i understand scales and that songs are in certain keys, but i don't really know how to find out which key a song is in. i also have zero experience with any kind of solo work. so i'm seriously considering putting out the money for formal lessons, but i'm not sure how much i can get out of it.
so how did you fine people of ants marching learn how to play guitar? is it worth while getting real lessons?
Finding the key is quite easy, try to find out the note that matches the beginning humming or tune of the song, usually the song will be on that Key or scale. Generally the rock/blues songs follow I IV V chord progression. That is Tonic, Sub-Dom and Dominant chord progression or popularly the 12 Bars Blues progression.

You cannot directly jump on to scales and chords, there are a number of basic things that you must learn before going to the advanced concepts. First of all you must learn to hold the guitar, hold the pick, start with the open strings, then closed string exercises, picking up speed and develop muscle memory and you can move on to scales and chords.

There are many online guitar lessons...!

Unless you're doing a rigorous theory course, there's nothing wrong with learning scales and chords before understanding how they work. And I don't think knowing how to hold the pick correctly is an advanced concept I already covered that aspect in this thread though, not sure if you saw my lesson posts in here.

I'd say it's usually a little more complicated than this....

My 2 cents: Make up your own chords.

    Dave does it.

It's fun and adds a lot of originality to any music you write.

I don't mean to douchily rain on your parade but I don't think there are any chords left to make up in western music haha. Dave just plays in inversions and different voicings a lot, he's not really making up a chord. And anything you think you make up is probably just some sort of maj/dom/min 9th or 13th or a minor major 7th or something.

But I do agree finding a new (to you) chord sound can be a morale and creative boost sometimes. When I first started I used to just look through chord shapes and pick some out and see where it took me.

Never took lessons, bought my first guitar in 2002. Tried to learn for 3-6 months and got frustrated and stopped. Picked it back up one day and learned the basic chords. Then started learning songs. Started to learn to switch chords easily and to sing while playing. About a year in, by 2003 I started to learn scales and solos. In late 04-05 I joined a band. Played for maybe 4 years in this band. Played lead guitar. I can solo quite well. I've been told I'm very good at playing by lots of people.

Learning guitar just came naturally, as did other instruments I picked up. I just have a musical brain I guess. I've been meaning to get back into a band again but just been in kind of a rut lately.

I just got the Dave Mattews Taylor 914-CE signature model... It is HEAVEN. I am up to over 50 DMB songs I can play. I finally learned The Stone and it is by far my favorite to play besides Fool to Think which is a close second. What are your favorites to play? I saw some one is learning LITHOG .. that one is pretty cool I know it as well, the thing about that particular song is everytime I see some one play it, they have thier own way of doing it. I have even seen Dave play it three different ways.

I have been playing for 3 years now and I have never had a single lesson. I taught myself everything I know from Ultimate-Guitar.com. I really think it is a waste of money to spend money on a lesson you are getting from a complete stranger that could possibly : Not be a good teacher, plays a completely different style then you'd like to learn, and they usually just want your money.

I think your best jamming with some people at open mic nights, friends/family, and people you meet that you can ask for some FREE pointers. Trust me, you do not need lessons.
