Madman’s Eyes…the song that no one knew existed til 6 shows remained last tour…getting heavier play in 2022 with more shows available for it.

Bold observation, my guy

MME is probably my personal least favorite off the '22 list, but they all great songs. Doesn't change that all the '21 ones are generally stuff I don't care to see at a show either.

I think at this point I could say "the '22 SPAC N2 encore was great" and people would flock to my comment to say "Yeah it wasn't that great... PFWG an underrated deep track anyways" just to try to poke holes in my statement.

Pretty sure that’s not true. I think you may be making up more up more people on this site than Brenny these days. I’m genuinely seeing people satisfied & happy with their shows aside from the normal gripes (sledgehammer, “how dare they play post-2004 material”, etc). 2021 also was the first full band tour in over 2 years. 2022 was never going to deliver that excitement.

When you have an incremental improvement tour (which 2022 looks like it may be), people don’t always get sky high right away. Personally, I felt 2015 was a pretty awesome tour, but it being similar to 2014 by way of set format & the ladies still showing up at times just done better, people seemed donezo even tho things were much improved.

Do you not also people saying that people would be content with Dave shooting their grandma because one of the longest (the longest ever?) TD streaks ended? People love to hate on '22.

At least someone admits the rose colored glasses effect. Most '21 defenders taking that shit to their graves.

Want to explain your thought process that you commented on MME to detract from the positives of '22 of all the songs in that post?

Re: I don't know about you, but I'm feeling '22 (tour chat)

Is there some award that gets handed out if 2022 has a poll that people vote it better than 2021? What a hill to continually try to die on. People discussing or debating things or pointing out flaws in your specifically catered sample sizes of things isn’t them crapping on the tour, just asking you to make a non-skewed argument.

The false equivalences are silly. Just because people are bummed that the TD streak ended doesn’t mean they are taking a dump on the 2022 tour. It simply means they are disappointed the td streak is over, nothing else. It was fun and impressive, sad to see it come to an end (although Star Spangled Banner partial believers unite!!! Lol)

I said the 2 year gap in touring was a factor in the excitement for 2021, not the whole picture.

And i picked out Madman’s Eyes cuz it’s a new song that they obviously weren’t ready to play til that time. If it had been ready earlier in the tour, it’d been played as much as Walk Around the Moon in 2021. It’s understandable it had only 4 plays in that tour.

How do we know it wasn't ready? OATB is clearly ready. Why has it only been played once this year? Maybe it was just played less that tour and happened to debut late. Speaking of skewed arguments...

Ocean and the Butterfly was a dud at full band shows last year with audiences, so they dropped it. It got played once this year cuz a girl wore a light up butterfly outfit to deer creek and Alpine and Dave decided to pull it out recognizing her the second time. Even pointed at her when he said the word “butterfly” the first time.

I can’t tell you for certain whether madman’s eyes was ready or not, no. But it was new and i imagine they didn’t want to play it til they felt it was ready to be played live. I’m not skewing anything with that rationalization.

Stop being a one extreme or the other/gotcha loon. Have a conversation instead of an attack with people.

Not skewing anything with a rationalization based on information you don't actually have and/or made up?

Agreed on this point. Would be interesting if in response to my original comment I got something like "yeah '22 has some cool songs getting more play, but I think '21 had other things going for it that I liked though. Not sure MME is as fair to include on that list since it was introduced so late in the tour"

Something to add for the Pro-2022 column:

We have here the streak of 30 straight shows with a tour debut that just ended.

2021 had a nice streak. In total, 28 shows out of 39 in 2021 had a tour debut. So 2022 already has passed that as well. With 15 shows to go, I'm sure we'll see more too. At bare minimum I think we'll see tonight (Raleigh), WPB, Gorge, Colorado and potentially Chula Vista (Friday Night Concert Series) land TDs.

The return of regular rotation Two Step cannot be understated. Glad they figured out a way to make it work.

The run of openers leading up to Bethel was amazing:

    Recently
    Shotgun
    Pig
    That Girl Is You
    #41
    Bartender
    One Sweet World
    Tripping Billies
    Fool to Think
    Fool in the Rain

10 unique mostly awesome openers (don't mind that little TGIY thrown in there )

Very ideal when their great songs are played regularly as opposed to only here and there in an entire year

Having a blast this tour. Band sounds great, hope they enjoy their time off and stay healthy for the shows out West. I’ll have to sleep when I’m dead, because August is another busy month of live music.

Also, I haven’t listened to all the shows from this tour, but on paper my top 5 probably Hartford, Toronto, Jones Beach, SPAC N2, and Bethel.

I have listened to a handful and agree! Thought last year was good, but this is shaping up to be the best post boyd tour yet. Band is firing on all cylinders. Dave isn't afraid to reach deep into sets. Getting PFWYG twice now is promising. I think judging by the first take they did on it, Dave wanted to get it right! So they practiced it and really nailed it the second time. First time was not bad by any means, but seemed like a last minute off the cuff thing judging by Dave's smiling worried face on stage. Carter doesn't really know when to come in and then they kind of find the groove. Second time through was boss though. Just a great performance.

Also the new songs and both Breaks. Bartender, Two Step, BEF, Some deep cuts from Everyday. It's pretty awesome and I hope they stick to it. Sometimes they take the break and come back and go back into turtle mode. Play it safe outside of the Gorge when they hit the west coast.

Two Step being back and Jimi not being 19 minutes and played every night has already made this my favorite tour in the Buddy era.

Regardless of what you think, they do a great job of incorporating all eras of their catalogue into the live experience. You get a little of everything, and I think that's a good thing.

Since Buddy joined the lineup, each tour has built off the previous and has gotten better and better. Each year since 2018, they have continued to bring different arrangements, bring back old sections of songs, and add new jams. They have been on an upwards trend for the past 5 years. Sure, the setlists could be more varied from night to night or have more classic songs. But that's been the case for the better part of two decades (with the exception of 2013). At least the openers and encores have been pretty well varied this year.

Overall, 2021 and 2022 are pretty damn good tours.

Well said. They added a new member and lost a founding member/key instrument 4 years ago seemingly out of nowhere. I think every year this crew continues to tour, they will improve

Bela Fleck is playing tomorrow night within walking distance of my house in Salt Lake. For weeks this was going to be the play.

But after how much fun we had at the Gorge, this will be my second weekend in a row of a monster road trip to see Dave Matthews Band. Let's keep this party rolling fam.

(Honorable shout-out to my work's liberal PTO policy)

5 songs exclusive to each tour and their combined number of plays.

2021: #40, Broken Things, Captain, The Last Stop, JTR for 8 total combined plays of these songs

2022: #34, Break for It, Break Free, The Dreaming Tree, Shotgun for 33 total combined plays of these songs

Both tours had some cool unique songs to them, you were just more likely to actually catch them in 2022.

Exclusive '21 songs with double digit higher plays: I Want a New Drug (15), Sexy MF (14), Singing from the Windows (13)

Exclusive '22 songs with double digit higher plays: Break For It (10), Break Free (13), Come On Come On (16)

Another boogeyman of '22 from early in the tour was that WIA would dominate the encore well... Two Step is the top played E2 and has 14 more total plays this year over last, WIA has appeared in the encore 3 times in '22 and 4 times in '21. PFWG>Two Step, PFWG>Too Much (fake)>Halloween, and #34>So Right>What You Are encores also join the mix of encores in '22.

Despite many acting like these songs were the bane of this tours existence, with 5 tour stops left (counting 2 nighters as one "stop"), it is very likely all these songs will clock less plays in '22 than in '21 as they all currently have 6 or more plays in '21 than '22:
    Can't Stop
    Corn Bread
    Everyday
    Louisiana Bayou
    Shake Me Like a Monkey

Still feeling '22 as the tour winds down. Definite improvement over '21. If only it was the first year back from the pandemic and I would be so much more fond/nostalgic of it!!!
