Parenting Thread

Couldn't find a general thread about parenting. Figured there should be a place to post advice, funny moments, struggles, anything really.

I'll start with a fun one. The last few days my 4 year old has been complaining his neck hurts, even though he wants to wrestle or play "Venom" all the time, which consists of him being Spiderman and tackling the shit out of me. I figured the neck thing was just him mimicking me because I woke up with a strained neck last week.

Last night around 8 I'm getting him ready for bed and his neck is swollen the size of a clementine on the side. We basically panic and I call the pediatrician and take him to urgent care. Luckily it seems to just be strep, which he had a few weeks ago also. It's interesting how we can be exhausted from work and ready to end the night, to flipping the switch when we're worried about something.

My daughter had stomach pains on Tuesday and Wednesday but it seemed like really bad cramps. Then around 2AM Thursday she begins throwing up. At 3:30 AM we are on our way to Children's Hospital. Zero traffic heading in to the city at that time. Turned out it was just a gastrointestinal virus but being a type 1 diabetic complicates things. She's fine now. That is at least my 5th middle of the night trip to the ER between my 2 kids. So chances are this won't be your last trip like this.

    Re: Parenting Thread

Took him to the walk-in clinic last week for the first time, but no RSV, and no pink eye. All good, and he's much better now.

A minor thing: He has eczema on his legs. They are so dry. We have been using lotion, baby oil, baths, but nothing really works. Apparently it is fairly common though and babies often grow out of it.

An actual question: Anyone deal with a baby that won't stop sticking his fingers in his mouth? His knuckles are raw from always sucking on his hands. We use babyganics safe hand sanitizer regularly on his hands, but don't want to put lotion or anything on them because he will just stick it into his mouth. Anyone dealt with something like this?

Have you tried a pacifier and/or given the baby a ring or toy to chew?

4 year old is on an antibiotic for strep, so his stomach is a bit of a mess. He bet on a fart and lost, literally sprayed all over the garage wall and floor. Looked like a splatter shot

Lol, but not really. I feel your pain.

Always couple antibiotics with a probiotic. They make chewable ones that are like gummy bears.

Ahh, the days of the mundane everyday illnesses you all are dealing with.

Being part nurse part doctor will always be a part of parenting, though barring serious illness (God forbid) the real “parenting” I’d say doesn’t start until you also become counselor, protector, and role model.

Basically 8-12 grades when your now dealing with peer pressure, teen social dynamics, drugs, alcohol, suicide, driving, and preparing for the future.

Edit: forgot sex. (That’s what she said)

You’re a weird angry guy dude so how you took that doesn’t surprise me.

It wasn’t addressed to anyone’s comments specifically but only to provoke the thought that from my experience dealing with physical sickness as hard as it can be isn’t anything compared to when the school calls you and says they received a report from another student that said your kid said he was going to kill himself.

Or your kids friend gets raped by a teacher.

These were times I felt as stretched as I ever had as a parent and it still wasn’t enough.

No, it isn’t a pissing contest, everyone here will go through it in some way. My kids are just older.

My only point is that was what I felt the hardest part of parenting is, not reading dosages from the bottle even though that too can be hard.

It telling your kids you’re getting a divorce.

Of course everyone's parenting journey will be different, no one expects it to be the same. Just the way you worded it came off condescending because you implied that anything that was discussed thus far wasn't real parenting.

It’s just the way it read. Maybe with your extra explanation it would not have.

And luckily not all parents and kids will have to go thru your last statement. That was not as easy one for me.

I can tolerate anything but all forms are unpleasant, I guess some are worse than others though.

Of course all forms of caring for your kids is parenting. For me it just became 1 million times harder when they hit 14.

I remember when my kids whole team made the B hockey team and he was put on C, even though he could skate circles around half those players. He was heartbroken and that was up there with some of the most difficult parenting situations I remembered at the time.

I know we share that last part. Low point in my life.

Apologies to anyone that my post came off as douchey to.

Current foster kid had some eczema issues and we switched to bathing 2-3 times per week (had been doing nightly before) using only unscented castille soap (Dr Bronners) and Cerave lotion, cleared it up in a couple weeks. Lots of kids (or at least lots of foster kids I've had) are sensitive to calendula and they put that shit in everything, even many of the "free and clear" baby soaps have it.

Here is something cool. I thought I'd hate being a father. I mean, I really dislike kids.

Turns out being a father is fucking awesome. I still hate kids though. Except my daughter of course.
