Marvel’s ‘Blade’ Finds New Director With ‘Lovecraft Country’ Helmer Yann Demange
    Quote:
Marvel Studios’ Blade is being unsheathed once more, this time with a whole new creative team.

Yann Demange, who directed the pilot of HBO’s boundary-pushing horror series Lovecraft Country, has come aboard to helm the vampire action thriller that still has Mahershala Ali attached to star.

Meanwhile, Michael Starrbury, who earned an Emmy nomination for penning an episode of Ava DuVernay’s drama, When They See Us, has been hired to pen a brand new script for the feature.

The new team puts the project back on track for after losing its original director, Bassam Tariq (Mogul Mowgli) in September. The parting of ways was due to creative differences and occurred suddenly as the project was in pre-production and heading towards a November production start in Atlanta.

Rather than jamming another director in something that clearly needed an overhaul, Marvel pressed pause for a deeper look under the hood. That meant a page one rewrite for the project, which had labored in the screenwriting phase. Ali was personally involved in selecting the writer, according to sources.

Details are being kept under wraps but sources say the new intent is for Blade to dark and gritty in tone, falling on the edgier side of Marvel fare and maybe even find common shading with the fondly-remembered Blade movies made in the early 2000s by New Line.

The plan is go into production in Atlanta in 2023, maintaining Blade’s release date that is set for Sept. 6, 2024

Glad they’re going for a darker and grittier take. I don’t think anyone wants a light hearted Blade. After Werewolf By Night and Deadpool I imagine an R rating is in play.

    He sure is

    But it’s really a Mantis/Drax adventure

the latter helps me with any preconceived feelings going in. starlord's character really just irks me like none other. and i dont think its credit given to his acting abilities.

will say though the peter, tony, and starlord chat on titan in infinity was was done really well but the "we'll do my plan" monologue by starlord was so annoying and such a push.

the rest of that interaction was :chefs kiss however

Guardians special is a 10/10 for me. Kind of makes me sad Gunn will be at DC full-time because I’ve had liked him to do more MCU holiday specials.

Guess I'm in the minority that didn't love the Holiday Special. Drax/Mantis are side characters that should best be used sparingly. After Vol. 2 Drax's character got really annoying for me.

I managed to do it twice.

It's very good, but I think Rock 'n' Roller Coaster is more intense than Cosmic Rewind.

probably the end of these guys as a "team", but not in general

killing everyone off as you exit a franchise seems too self serving but you never know.

I was going to comment on Drax's screen time in vol. 1 vs. vol 2 but when I looked it up it's a minute's difference. (21 vs. 22). So that argument is dead. I will concede you are correct.

Reframing my argument, Drax got the Thor treatment. He was mostly an angry guy with minimal jokes in his first appearance. In the vol. 2 he was dumbed down and reduced to cheesy jokes. By and large, I don't find James Gunn's humor funny, and that felt amplified in Vol. 2 and to the characters since then.

What I felt worked about Drax in vol. 1 was when he was the angry guy and he made an offhand joke it was funny. But in vol. 2 (and subsequent appearances) when the village idiot makes a joke about having sensitive nipples it's just cringe.

Agreed. The team is done but not all the characters will die. There was an overarching red herring in that trailer as to who will die. But GOTG won't be done, just these characters. A new team will be formed if I had to guess. Maybe a character or two will crossover (ie Bucky to new Captain America)

Members I think are safe: Groot because they already killed his dad in Vol. 1. Cosmo because she (he?) is new to the team. It wouldn’t carry a lot of emotional weight to kill them yet.

Members I think are definitely dead: Drax because Bautista has seemed done with Drax for a while.

Drax def went through a pretty drastic character change, i agree. My head canon is that he got a little more easy going and fun when joining a team thats kind of light hearted. you kind of are what you eat in that sense lol. I think a lot of it landed, but yeah, it could have been toned down a little. You can tell Gunn was just dying to try out some specific jokes about being big and angry, and i think you're right when you say it did take a way from the "im gonna get revenge on the people that killed my family" arc at the beginning of 1.

I don't know. It's a toss up up for me.

and yes, we'll get some new members after maybe losing Rocket and losing Drax. i think its possible it'll be a long time before we get another self proclaimed Guardians movie, but people love Groot, and and Chris Pratt brings in viewers, so the story isnt over yet

My head canon here is that because this was a sapling from the original Groot, he's going to look different.
You're right though, from a purely aesthetic standpoint, I thought the original design looked better.

Yea, I took it as this is a whole new Groot. New persona, new look, etc. It's the Groot way!
