Re: The Investment Thread (help with savings, stocks, retirement funds, etc.)

I think my biggest issue with this whole signing up for 401 thing is that I'm losing a couple hundred bucks a month that I won't see till I'm 60.

I mean, I know that that's the theory behind "saving," but still. At least my mutual shit I can take out if I had to.

hence planning for retirement. you need to learn the importance of compounding interest. sure you're losing say $200 this pay check, but whats 6% of $200 (initial) + 6% of previous (quarter 2) + etc. over 40 years. hint: a shit ton.

I'm thinking I'll put 5% which they'll match in Roth.

    bridge,

it sucks. losing money out of your check now sucks. theres no other way to put it. my wife and i dont make that much and we have a mortgage and student loans, and we're each putting $125/month into our individual IRA's. I'd rather have that $250/month in our budget, but i'll be thanking myself in 30 yrs

    Ok 401 is set up.

I need to figure out what to do with the money currently in the savings portion of my bank, cause it's doing 0 for me right now.

Does anyone know a place where I can review companies that are public. I really would like to invest in REI and I'm wondering if there is an "official" outlet to find out this kind of information.

    thanks for your time.

CapIQ's first guess at REI is an energy company. The next two guesses are countries.

Re: The Investment Thread (help with savings, stocks, retirement funds, etc.)

Was offered a free financial adviser session with my bank recently so I took them up because I had some questions, mostly regarding to college for the kids and she said that it is now recommended that I have 1.5 to 2 million dollars saved to retire with my wife. She said each dollar I have right now is projected to be worth only 28 cents by the time I retire. That number really put things in perspective for me.

Scaled back the 401k when we bought the new house and had the kids but now that the wife went back to work this year, I really need to ramp that up higher.

Again, she said I have to assume social security won't be there for my generation. That will be really fucked up if it isn't there but I've kind of always assumed that anyways.

I have enough insurance to cover my debts if I die tomorrow, but it's also growing cash as a living benefit. I put $200/mo into my insurance, and the cash will grow enough that I'll be able to put my kids through most of school. It grows roughly 5-6% annually, tax-deferred, and unlike a Roth or 401k, I can withdraw the money whenever I want with no questions asked. I'd like to learn more about this. I don't have any dependents, so haven't looked into it other than talking to some insurance guys casually. How does it grow 5-6% annually, what is the vehicle?

For the record, you can withdraw contibutions to a Roth IRA penalty free. So if you had a Roth IRA of $50k and were contributing $5k per year, if you had this year's $5k still sitting in cash, you could withdraw it whenever you want. It's just the earnings you've made that you cannot withdraw.

So there are some out there that say "Hey no big right, use it anytime you have an emergency" and tell you to just let some Roth IRA money sit in cash instead of dealing with a savings account of worry money.

I'm no investment guy and thus no opinion on any of it, but it's nice knowing that you have another fallback if shit ever hit the fan in your life.

i wasnt aware of this. i may increase our contribution now, knowing i can WD it if I need to. what do you mean by the above though? so over time if you contribute $50k and have earned $20k in interest, you can deduct up to $50k, because that was your contribution, correct?

Yes but, thebridge has to be careful about this because it looks like he's using his employers roth 401k which will not allow him to take a withdrawal penalty free. When he leaves that job and rolls that money into a regular Roth the IRS will still see it as a conversion rather than a contribution and he will pay a 10% penalty on any withdrawals before 59.5 plus income tax on the earnings.
