Wow- it sounds like they went into some kind of (really messy) 3/4 or 6/8 kind of thing instead of the usual 4/4 payoff jam section. It sounds like shit. Maybe Carter was spacing out and went back into the "I think the word of you" section which is in 6/8-- everyone is confused - then they land on this groove that keeps this timing instead of ever finding their way to the normal 4/4 outro.

On initial viewing, I thought it seemed too constantly bad to be a mess up- but I think it has to be. At first I thought is this Rawshawn trying to be a hero and encouraging a switch up of this section? (going for a subverting of expectations like the old Too Much slowdown, or the off key satellite intro, etc). If so, that'd be a terrible idea for Rapunzel- the whole song has different time sigs already (5/4, 4/4, and 6/8) and is a build up to this resolution jam section at the end. At first I thought Dave seemed to know it was coming (?) based on his vocal adlibs there, but re-watching I think he's confused too and expects that Carter will catch it and bring it back to the normal jam. The absolute whiffs on the notes / timing on the very ending of the song seal it that this was a true "trainwreck" version of this song. I seem to remember that Rapunzel has had a few trainwreck versions over the years.

The weirdest part to me is that Jeff and Rashawn keep playing like it's the normal Rapunzel outro. Carter, Dave, and Stefan get into a cool little groove, but Jeff and Rashawn just kind of...ignore it until the end, when they finally get in with the rest of the band.

Everybody tried at some point to save it, but nobody else knew what particular way they were trying, so it never landed. That was brutal. And Rashawn and Coffin still managed to play "who can blare the loudest" even in the chaos.

Yeah, the 1998 one at least eventually finds its footing and ends normally. This one isn't quite as much of a mess, but man, they just never could get on the same page, and after 4 minutes of trying they just said screw it and stopped

One really random thing I noticed is that Jeff throws the All Things Considered lick in at the end of this one, and the only other time that song's been interpolated into Rapunzel was the 1998 trainwreck one. How in the world could that coincidence have happened.

I haven't listened to it since, but at the show I thought it sounded awesome. I wasn't exactly sober, per say, which probably influenced my opinion. I didn't know it was a 'train wreck' until I got back home Tuesday.

Carter made a mistake.

The attempt to recover was an absolute disaster.

This is not a true jam band. They play within a structure and they collapsed when the structure fell apart.

It was a bummer miss on one of their best songs.

Rapunzel has a lot going on, very easy for it to go off the rails. There's lots of other examples too, although not as bad.

I remember Va Beach 2010 having a near trainwreck Rapunzel but not quite as bad as they were able to get on the same page eventually before the outro.

My top 3 answers: Carter got his CBD gummies mixed with Tim's THC ones. B.) Nothing happened it went perfectly and as planned. The plane was landed with no injuries. Or C.) Carter was a tad early on the final accents. I am a drummer that likes to fool with odd times, and I can tell you that I was getting lost in the linear shit Carter was throwing down. The band was also playing around the beat, it was pretty spectacular to see it from pit, if they would have stuck the ending it would been one of those F Yeah moments.

what else were jeff and rashawn supposed to do? they're not the ones responsible for the backbone of the song. they're supposed to solo there. its up to everyone else to figure out how the song is supposed to go.

Rapunzel is my favorite DMB tune. I haven't seen it live since 2000 in ATL when there was a slight vocal flub by Dave. It still stings.
