Tim's phrasing and tone in my opinion are inferior to most guests especially when it comes to the sound of DMB. I love him with TR3 as his tone and sound make TR3 what it is. But many times his tone doesn't fit the DMB sound as well.
I was at Deer Creek and Lawlors blues rock based tone (Mayer used that for his 2 guest spots) fit cornbread much better than the piercing headache making slides tim typically has on the song but was out that weekend.
Taking even further listen to the slide guitar of Derek Trucks this year on graves and how much more in tune he was with his phrasing unlike tim who just shoots out 10 notes per second. Speed and scale skills don't make great solos, timing and phrasing do.

Another distinction between Tim vs other guitarists is the Phish + Dave version of So Damn Lucky in Mexico. Mix was a little rough but again Trey's Phrasing and buildup in his playing that song with Dave was better than Tim. Tim typically blows eardrums out with his higher fret playing. Trey instead only made quick trips to the higher frets and then switched to the middle frets and strings and then slid up a little more before going back down.
