06/02/2018 Tour debut (from the lawn, sorry) A better source will be available inevitably.

This sounds pretty straight forward. I wonder if they brought this song into the studio and performed it as-is for the album?

The album version is supposed to feature parts Roi laid down in ‘06 Haunted Hollow sessions with Batson.

I think it’ll be fine, didn’t even notice at Blossom, it sounded great. Furthermore, I never thought of Boyd not being there once all weekend. Crazy to say, I think they’re better off without him.

Love that guitar riff. Lyrics are okay - they work in the context of the song. And I'm in the camp that doesn't really care if Carter uses the hi-hat, ride, or whatever... ha.

Yes. Most people don’t like this drum pattern as much. I agree that the other pattern is better BUT this LT14 version is a prime example that it doesn’t ruin the song. Listen to it, then listen to the LT44 version immediately after. LT44 has the “better” drum pattern, but I am of the opinion that the LT14 IOY is way better.

Yeah, I like the non-Coldplay style drumming better, but I find enjoyment in both styles, so it doesn't affect me any... not like leaving out the 3rd verse of Grey Street (and adding a bit more lyrics to the chorus each run through), or saying "good" instead of "sweet" at the end of the Sugar Will chorus. Those changes always eat at me a bit, even though the songs still aren't "ruined" for me because of those changes.

This feeling seems to be a hallmark of the fandom of this band, I suppose. Even if we only get one official studio version, we're fortunate to have decent to near studio live versions of all of these songs as they have evolved. Can't think of any other band that you have such access to the evolution of the songwriting process like DMB.

Exactly this... If there's something we like or don't like, we can always seek/avoid it. And no, I can't think of any other band that gives you access to live material (and the song evolution process) like with DMB.

Fleetwood Mac/Stevie Nicks both have interesting studio album re-issues which let you in on the song evolution process from a "demo to final studio cut" viewpoint, and have released some live material which differs in sound style depending upon which tour it was from, but it's nowhere near as extensive as DMB's is. DMB's more from a live setting and FM/SN's more from a studio setting.

I definitely want to play it at Hollywood Bowl!!! Idea Of You on the album is the best production I have ever worked on. The vocal performance is LIFE!! And Leroi!!!!!

My main concern with IOY is chunking power chords during the chorus like the 2016 versions. Way more detrimental than the snare pattern. I can reallly tell with the taper audio if that is happening or not.

Has it been said yet that 4:44 is not a good indication of the tempo of the studio version? Since there is no separate track for the live intro on Apple Music/iTunes/Spotify then 4:44 surely includes whatever the live intro is.

The live intro is very short, basically some crowd noise that fades into the track. Basically a few seconds.

Would be really cool if they play all of the different ways its been played over the years this tour (hi hat, ride, "all grown up and moved away" lyrical outro, slow intro, fast intro, etc). A true "past, present and future" treatment of the song.

Posted in the album discussion thread but I'll say it again, I can't imagine having the ears that can listen to the clocks drumming on this song and hear it as the same tune. It absolutely ruins the entire feel of this tune. Such a shame and such a dumbass move by Carter. This is once again the obvious where no one in the band is ok speaking up to each other about bad musical decisions.
