I gave it a 7, but I would give it a 6.5 if I could. Love it musically, but the lyrics aren't anything special. If it had better lyrics, I would consider rating it higher

I am just bored by the lyrics. I know it is really subjective and my own personal taste, but I didn't enjoy the big picture let's get together rhetoric on Stand Up and this song really takes me right back to that time period lyrically. I guess it is just getting really old to me.

I like the song alright musically, but this is yet another song on which they lost me on the lyrics.

If lyrics are bad, they're bad. Recently was released in 1993. Those lyrics are great. Gaucho's lyrics are awful.

This comment is a joke. If you LOVE Big Whiskey and you think this is 'pretty bad' then I think your opinion sucks. If anything, this is a big whiskey sound with a little more big 3 style thrown in. I whole-heatedly disagree, with the smallest amount of respect due.

I am really disappointed in this song. Very weak lyrics...I expected better. I consider lyrics to be more important than the music, and these lyrics just do not do it for me. Mercy while not mind blowing, can stand on its own as a Dave solo song (meaning the lyrics are good enough). This song, however, is pretty lame. I would rather hear incoherent mumbling (see Raven, LWS) than bad lines. Unfortunately, these lyrics are coherent, but bad. Music-wise, it's decent, but the guitar sound around 2 and half minutes in is a little too heavy. I'm usually pretty generous and accepting of most new DMB songs, but I really don't care for this one.

My assessment, if I heard this in the studio, would be, "Nice first draft of the lyrics Dave, but keep editing them and maybe it could be decent."

I have no idea why you think this, but its your opinion. I do not get the bolded at all however, especially if you think that lyrics are so important.

I think it's a bit early to actually rate this tune, but I really don't get where people are saying the lyrics are bad. While the chorus is grade A weaksauce, the verses...

With fire to keep us warm
And tools we made from rocks and bones
    A roof over your head
And walls to keep you safe in bed
There must be more than this
So God was born and we in His
    Image of fear and love
Look down upon from up above

    and

    We crossed the oceans wide
Built cities to the sky, oh Lord
Looked up when we were flying
But will we not survive ourselves?

...are pretty fucking great. Honestly, if those lyrics were thrown into any song on the Big Three, they'd be considered better than pretty much everything written after 2000. They're easily on par with You Never Know, which is such a "critical darling" around here (to the point of being ever so slightly overrated). Yes, the chorus sucks, but that shouldn't take away from the verses.

I also dig "Let me show you a movie, You know we put a man on the moon," and the implications that go along with that.

The music is fucking great. Like, really really great. The screaming kids are...weird.

    Re: Rate Gaucho

Musically this song is very good. I love the acoustic intro with dave and tim. It slowly builds with adding boyd before the chorus. Then a great horn lick with carter drumming perfect on top of them. Then perfect mixing of violin and horns in the second verse. Tim switches to electric and boyd picks up the pace. All of it is great. Then the bridge comes and that doesn't do too much for me, but then it drops into the heavy bass. BADASS. I like the vocal layering but 'please wake up 4x' is LAME 4x. The heartbeat/space noise is cool with tim touching over it lightly before the kids come in, which IMO is really cool and then the bands KILLS IT ontop of them. Carter is going off, horns, violin, tim...I can not wait for this song to turn into a monster jam. I am in love with the outro really.

Now the lyrics are another story. Pretty weak imo...just doesn't do a lot for me at all. So overall I gave it a 5 because I hold lyrics in a high standard, but I love the music and am very happy with the mix

I dont know if it is quite THAT high on my list, but it is a very very well produced studio song. If you could just remove the lyrics youll see its quite a song

I did mean to point that out in my post, this was the only highlight lyrically for me on this song.

    This.

And the kids freak me out.

I'll give Gaucho a solid 7. The more I listen to it, the more I like it...and the more I get it's ominous "we're all fucked" vibe. Compared to some of the shit released...I'm looking at you Can't Stop, Corn Bread, and all of Stand Up...this song is a masterpiece.

8 for now. I will see if the song grows on me, though. It could become a 10 by the end of the week, or sink to a 5. Only time will tell.

Rated it a 9. It's the best song the band has made since 2000.

The kids don't bother me at all. I don't understand why anyone would freak out about it. Kids singing the chorus makes sense, but I can see why someone wouldn't like it.

Solid track IMO; really like the first half of it.
Hate and despise this 'argument'. Time of writing of song bears NO relevance on how a song is received. There are less liked songs from the early period based purely on the fact that Dave's writing was absolutely insane. There have been many songs this side of 'the fall' (Everyday) that everyone (ok most people) loves and is clamouring for (YNK, Crazy Easy, GGT, Sugar Will, Shotgun etc.). The fact is that Dave's writing has got increasingly worse, and THAT's why people don't like the new songs as much as the old ones.

I gave it a 5, based on the fact that the lyrics are cheesy and the almost equally cheesy section where Carter does the 'heartbeat' beat. But the music is promising, and it signals a potential return to Dave's experimentation with tonality - BW was so unexperimental!
I know I have high standards - that's because of the amazing music they made themselves in the Big 3.

I think LITHOG is the best song the band has done in the studio since 2000, but would love to have heard it with Lillywhite at the helm.

Gaucho is an 8, as big an improvement over the Cavallo-produced Big Whiskey sound as that was over the Batson-produced Stand Up sound.

When a new tune comes out I actually listen to the lyrics as a priority since the writing has been so lacking over the recent years and am wanting to be wowed. Just one dimensional and obvious has been the norm. This song lyrically really sucks. I agree the music is good but the lyrics bring this tune to a 3 for me.

...are pretty fucking great.

I don't think I could of said it better myself....at this point I just don't think some people will ever be happy with what the band puts out unless they claim they were lost songs from the nineties. I like both tunes sure their no two step/ants but it's also almost twenty years later now people change along with the world around them ultimately changing the sound this band produces

I love the music on this one. I like Rashawn's flashes with the trumpet and Carter's drumming is sick.

This thread reminds me why I don't post in DMBc anymore. A 4 at best, this song is garbage and cheesy.
