Yea, I'm just setting and forgetting my index funds. Seen too many friends lose money trading individual stocks. Plus, I just don't want to spend the time on that.

This all day long. Day trading is a hobby and I have plenty of those already that won't possibly give me a heart attack because of a potentially bad decision. If I want to gamble, I'll go to the casino (but I hate gambling). My dad started doing day trading around the 2000 dot com boom. He only used "fun money" and at one point was up many tens of thousands of dollars, but lost that at some point (I think he did peal off some profits though). He's done some day trading ever since then, but it's definitely as a hobby and he seems to have good control over not losing more than he intended to put in. I've learned enough from hearing what goes into that to know it doesn't interest me.

I learned a long time ago that I don't have the willpower to quit when I'm behind and that losing big is way more depressing than winning big is empowering. And I'm talking about playing at like a low stakes blackjack table at a casino with money in my wallet or what I feel comfortable withdrawing from an ATM.

I can't imagine doing the same thing with my savings, which I could access any portion of with a click of a mouse.

take your monthly expenses and multiply by 6. put that number aside in a high yield savings account that’s fairly liquid. that’s your emergency fund so you can sleep at night. i used to do a 12 month which is unnecessary for most

pay off any debt (some folks like me put this step first, just depends on the situation, most people aren’t allergic to debt like i am.)

invest the rest like Route said, if you don’t need this until like 3-10 years from now. it’ll be for short-mid term goals like school, car, down payment, whatever. i like index funds (VTSAX mostly). maybe put 10% of that aside for speculative stocks if that’s your thing

if you DO have 6 month emergency fund:

    12k in a roth

    pay off debt

    invest most

    enjoy some
Roth only works if smudge is under the income limit for the year unless doing a backdoor Roth of course.

Some big names getting involved long now.

WSB shooting for $1000 by friday lol.

You should have held Neum. In the lingo of WSB, you got paper hands. Should have had diamond hands, held, and hitched a ride on this nonsensical rocket.

My buddy that turned me onto it is up over $100k on his relatively small investment. Has to activate his options by Friday I think. He said he's holding. FOMO in hindsight for sure. I'm doing fine, I simply bought shares, no thanks on options. But glad I didn't get paper hands. Hindsight is 20/20, wish I'd funded my trading account a few days earlier.

Blackrock just reported as Long on GME? See ya later shorts...

Wild. I'm two weeks into having an account, so none of this shit makes sense. Yesterday was the first I'd heard of all of this -- the terminology, the concept, etc. I pulled the trigger on 60 AMC shares this AM, along with 4 shares of GME. I ended up selling GME though and taking the $240 I made lol. Playing with pennies over here.

That works Timebomb07. When playing casino games, never play for more than you can lose.

Real money needs to be invested, following the advice in threads like this or elsewhere.

yeah. i have some long positions that are pretty dumb but i try not to poison the well by sharing it on here or anywhere in real life for that matter. learn from my mistakes, do the flowchart, if you have fun money you can speculate but take your profits when you can!

Exactly how I play. I really hate gambling, so buying stock really is counterintuitive. I'm letting the excitement of something new wear off, then probably won't mess around much more.

I ended up selling GME though and taking the $240 I made lol. Playing with pennies over here.
I was going to do a year long experiment. Put $1000 into stocks on robinhood, $1000 in sports betting, and then compare it to what my high yield savings accounts and retirement accounts did this year.

I don’t know anything about stocks, I am up a bunch and part of me thinks I should just sell. Sports betting is even more awful. Not gambling with money I can’t lose, but not nearly as much fun as I’d hoped.

Watching from afar as my employer mandates a minimum six month hold period for any purchase and no options allowed. Probably helps me more than it hurts but sometimes sad to miss out on a little fun.
