Self-identification of US adults being part of the LGBTQ community stands at 7.2% (and, for obvious reasons, that is likely understated quite a bit).

Even if that number was spot on, or was all encompassing (it isn’t - there are obviously LGBTQ minors), that’s 24M people or so.
Nearly 3x the amount of Jewish Americans, 5M more than Asian Americans, or ~50% of the black population.
It’s not some “super small” sub demographic, it’s likely understated and definitely under-represented, and they are as much of a target for hate and discriminatory laws as any other (or more than) minority demographic.
