Re: Live Trax 44 - 9/4/16 (Gorge)

For the Blu ray:

Pros:
•picture quality is stunning. Crystal clear. Possibly better than D&T Radio City but hard to say for sure since DMB has better, more dynamic lighting effects
•DTS-HD MA mix is fantastic. Nobody dominates. They're meshed together so nicely, and yet you can still clearly hear each member.
•great setlist obviously

Con:
•Dave's voice is rough

Haven't listened to the CDs so can't compare the mixes, but the Blu ray is great. Will be watching this for years. Sounds like I should just skip the CDs...

Really regretting not getting the bluray after reading the reviews. The more I've listened to the digital release the more I've come to dislike the mix on it. Tim needs to be slightly louder and the horns need to be a little lower. Some songs seem pretty muddy to me.

think that's the first time anyone's ever said that on these boards.

This. LT 44 Blu ray is how they should be mixed live. Of they sounded like that in concert there would be far fewer complaints on the boards.

It's really strange how much better the mix is on the BD than on the CD.

I've enjoyed most of the 5.1 mixes, just sucks that LTs 28, 32 and 36 are only available as 448 Kbps Dolby Digital.
Both LT40 and LT44 with lossless dts-ma tracks can be cranked up nice and loud and sound great - 5.1 mixes almost always have less aggressive dynamic range compression (loudness wars) too which makes them more pleasant to the ears...and that results in you wanting to turn them up.

I'm looking forward to LT48 already.

I don’t want to hear ONLY Tim like they did in past releases, I just prefer to be able to clearly hear every band member whether it’s Boyd, Tim, Jeff, etc. I do have to admit I’m not a fan of the repetitive horn lines of a song like R&R being front and center. They get a little annoying after awhile. But it also sounds awkward having Tim come in for a solo and straining to hear him.

Either way I’m looking forward to hearing the mix on the Blu-ray after hearing the praise it’s been getting!

Honestly, I had a hard time making it through the whole Blu-Ray just because of Dave's vocals; just like the first disc of Gorge 2002. Wish they would release the best show of the tour (whatever that may me) instead of what mgmt feels is the 'epic' show. Band sounds great, video quality and mixes are really, really good. If the leader of the band doesn't sound good, what good is the release?

Totally agree.. what made me realize this is listening to LT 42 and then LT 44 right after. Dave's voice still sounds great in 2007 - band sounds tight. Butch and Roi part of the band. LT 44 his voice sounds tired, worn. Band also sounds different.. a definite drop off. something happened between 2007 and 2016.

Dude, this was the final show after a whole summer of touring, the third night of an entire weekend of singing, and in a dry fucking dessert. Anyone's voice would be worn and tired after that.

Finally getting a chance to watch the Blu-ray and it’s teally enjoyable. Nice to take the trip back to my one and only Gorge weekend.

Maybe they just wanted to look more unison for the Blu-ray, but I noticed everyone is wearing black (even Carlos Malta), while Carter is wearing black pants, black hair wrap and a white Grux shirt. I know he always wears different versions of that shirt, but it made me wonder if they all wore black in honor of Roi, which makes the Grux shirt standout more. That would be cool if that’s why they did it. I felt the biggest let down about the Charlottesville show and Gorge was that they didn’t do much to honor Roi other then play Why I Am. The fact that they took the time to acknowledge their 25th anniversary but did next to nothing to talk about him, show a video or slideshow with #34 or something like that felt like a disservice to Roi.

They had the photo exhibit before Charlottesville celebrating their 25th with plenty of pictures of LeRoi. The band has talked about him a ton in interviews after his death.

They’ve made their living on the stage, so I think it would have been a cool move to do something at one of the shows. However I just watched Lie in our Graves and that mid section Jam was fantastic. Boyd absolutely nails that solo. I don’t know, maybe Roi wouldn’t have wanted a big spectacle, so instead they played their asses off. Say what you will about Daves voice, but they clearly put their all into this show. Say Goodbye is pretty rough though. Great release. The Blu-ray is worth it. It will get a lot of plays from me.

I keep coming back to that performance of Typical. The nice little Jeff intro, the horn breakdown, that last minute jam of the song... just great music.

whew! glad i got a copy while the supplies lasted then! i originally ordered only the CD-version, but I regreted not having the blu-ray too, so I ordered a new copy some weeks ago.

still, after watching it, i knew the lack of cameras would make the watching experience rather poor (it's basically 80% front Dave cam)

Common sense says it will be back up, they just need to press and print more. About the only thing they might not do anymore of is Wrigley Field N1. Maybe. That had an advertised limited run unattached to the Double Play box set.

Solid HD presentation of a great setlist of excellent performances?
Not surprised it's popular at all.

That being said, the tempos reach a fever pitch, an then just keep pushing and pushing. I really sense Carter's half-playful, half-sadistic urge to batter and punish the band...and the audience. The final arc of Last Stop/Ants is just exhaustingly, brutalizingly fast. Even LIOG, which Dave opens with a nice moderate tempo; Carter comes in at a breakneck.
And then Dave oddly seems to double down on his hoarse voice, choosing painful screamers like Burning Down the House and Last Stop.
A stimulating, impressive run, but definitely hard to take in in one setting.
(Just another reason it's great to have it on Blu-ray! Live? I frankly don't know if I would have made it to the end, and I KNOW my wife wouldn't have.)

That's my main issue too. It's almost anxiety-inducing how fast the tempo is. But being there was fantastic. Of course I was under the influence

At this point I prefer Dave's tempo over Carter's, solo and D&T songs have a better flow when Dave is setting the tempo

So glad I made this my first Gorge trip. I honestly felt like I was watching something pretty special. It felt like it was the end in some way, and whether they get a replacement for Boyd or not, it sort of was the final DMB show in a way. May have to watch this tonight.

I don't think they released it for Boyd, but it is the last full show with him, so it's a pretty special release, up there with LT14. (I don't count the Charlottesville 2017 tribute as a full show, that was like 6 or 7 songs.)

Because the Concert for Charlottesville was so short, it will probably never be considered for the Live Trax series. But it could be released in the DMBLive series and no one would complain, right?

No reason to waste a release of any kind on the Stevie Wonder shitshow
