Honestly, I didn't fully grasp the connection I had with Roi until after his passing. In hindsight, I think that I may have taken him, along with the entire band, for granted. Before his death, I simply viewed Roi as the smooth, soulful sax player in my favorite band. Afterward, I realized that his music--along with that of the other bandmates--had played a major role in my everyday life for quite some time. With that in mind, it was hard not to be affected when one of the key contributors to that music was suddenly ripped from my grasp. His death really floored me, and I'll be the first to admit that I didn't expect to have such an emotional response.
The same thing happened more recently with James Gandolfini. The Sopranos is probably my favorite television series of all time (if not, it's definitely up there), and I just did not see his death coming at all. When I finally processed what had happened, the influence of that series really...I don't know, "materialized," for lack of a better word.
