And in general, how are the Switch controllers? I demoed it for a few minutes at a best buy once and found it tough and the controllers a bit cheap feeling. But could have been the fact that A) the controllers are attached to the wall and it's really close to the screen and B) they'd been used non stop by customers

I actually think Odyssey surpasses Galaxy in every way, as you would hope for in the next step of Mario-centric games. And I really enjoyed Galaxy.
Controls are very similar to 64 with some new moves. If you've played any recent Mario games, you'll pick things up instantly. The addition of Cappy is great and adds a fresh feel. The Switch is a way better console than the Wii was, and as such, the graphics are fantastic. All of the new worlds look beautiful. A lot of them are very well thought out. Gameplay is GREAT. It's just really a fantastic game and I had a blast playing it. I think you will too.
As far as the joy cons are concerned, I like them a lot. A lot more free-feeling and not as clunky as the Wii remotes. The added versatility means you can really play the game however you feel comfortable. You can slide the joy cons into the classic "controller" vehicle provided, or play them free hand. Super fun either way, and you don't feel like the game is biased towards either configuration. Although playing free-hand is particularly fun with Odyssey for me.
