Madman’s Eyes (New Song)

Not sure how folks don’t like this song. I think has a pretty cool theme, haunting sound, well produced, great drums and overall song structure. The chorus is “different” but I’ve always felt it works because it gives the song a change of pace and a short period that feels slightly “fun” then it drops back into foreboding.

It’s a 8 out of 10 at least for me, right there with a song like What You Are and Broken Things as some of the best of the post LWS. (I’m lumping YNK I’m with the Big4)

This song is so freaking unbearably awful - largely because of the dumb falsetto chorus. I am not looking forward to hearing it played twice a night during this tour.

But the truth is that MME borders on self parody which is a good indication that it's time to pack it up, which I assume is what DMB will do in terms of studio output (the several solo songs on the tracklist of a supposedly DMB album also underscores this). The ACDC chorus, the on the nose lyrics, the stilted arrangements- these all represent a substantial dip in taste and an inability to reach former heights.

Break Free has to be included in that, IMO.

I have a feeling Monsters is going to be legit. I also think Vein is going to be very different in a good way. Probably will leave us wishing it was 5 minutes long though lol!

The song doesn't have the best mix (it's a bit squashed and muddy in spots), but it's a damn good song.

Oceans could be a REALLY good album track as well if done well. Like a Pay For What You Get, Let You Down level track.

The Only Thing has a shot too but I think that one has a wider range of outcome’s depending on how they did it.

Windows will probably be amazing but that damn song just makes me so frustrated from an emotional standpoint it’s a hard listen.

I’ve never seen a band get so consistently bad after being so consistently good. This song is atrocious and they’ve never done a good job of choosing singles off the albums. How was Do You Rmember not the first single off of CT?

"dumb falsetto" that's quality feedback right there.

I always take is as they go high in the chorus to be kids vocals. Higher voiced little kids running for their lives in school while little billy blasts away with his dads giant gun he has cause he is afraid of his own shadow or needs it to hunt squirrel.

It's the new dmb, more progressive rock rather than loose world folk jazz that they once were. I do wish it was less wall of sound and could separate parts better but this isn't the song from this album I'm gonna waste my time complaining about. If they went all prog rock and weird falsetto this album I'd love it.

My local radio station is playing the shit out of it so....

cause Do You Remember isn't good. Sounds like Jack Johnson. Dave can do much better than strum barre chords.

Got a text from a buddy who knows I like(d) DMB who said he saw it was released and asked what I thought. Gave him my (mostly negative take). He goes "yeh, I wasnt going to say anything if u liked it but what are they thinking. Song is weird AF do they think it would be good for radio? lol"

Said the chorus was where he turned it off. He's not a DMB fan but has been to shows. Definition of a "casual" at a show.

I've only seen a few awfuls haha? This is a good song, and they did a nice job in the studio with it. But, I think I get why the people who thing it's not good, think it's not good. And it has to usually do with the vocal melody in the chorus.

Music that can make you feel something is generally rare. Not that you want to be left with a negative emotion, you generally want some release after building that tension (and maybe that occurs with Looking for a Vein following MME on the album).

The chorus has always been strange, it's not like the studio ruined it or anything. That being said, I don't understand the underlying reverb/feedback sound throughout unless it's purposefully there to make you feel a little uncomfortable given the message of the song. However I don't think the band thinks on that kind of level when making music, someone thought it sounded good for whatever reason. I do like the song and have listened to it several times a day since it's been released, it's not nearly as bad as what some people make it out to be.

My buddy actually said the same thing the first time he heard it. The first time hearing it, it is definitely overwhelming. Even after being familiar with the live versions, I wasnt huge on the studio the first couple times through. The next morning I was driving to work while it was dark and dreary out and it absolutely clicked. Funny how that can happen.

Personally love the verse and pre-chorus vocals. In Dave's wheelhouse range, have power, and some desperation in them.

I've got it neck and neck with Squirm, don't know which one I like more, like them both.

I'm not sure anything that takes the Minarets or Last Stop influence could have me feel anything other than it's the budget version of those two songs, but that has a lot more to do with how good I think those songs are vs. anything wrong with the imitators.

I have been critical of the chorus but the riffs are nasty. I'll keep listening to it for the guitar alone but I do kinda cringe every time the chorus comes around.
