Hello there. Takes a Boyd hiatus to pull ya back in Good seeing you. I will not be reading this whole thread but I will leave people with this... Boyd obviously has set his priorities and in my opinion, cool. If he needs a prolonged break for his physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, whatever health, he deserves it. The man has been playing music, for us, on a mass level, longer than a (small?) section of his fanbase’s lives. I don’t foresee this being the last we hear from Boyd.

I do think it’ll change the dynamic in the band some more - of course in the immediate future but also for years to come. Just like anything else - from Peter leaving, to Butch, to Roi’s passing, etc. - Dave Matthews Band will adapt, adopt and continue to tour in one way or another. Clearly 2017 showed Dave and Tim still have desire to be out there, Stefan and Carter seem to be on board just based on a hunch and we all know Jeff and Rashawn are ready to play all the time.

Would I want them to bring in a substitute for this years tour, no. Not another violinist at least. Maybe mix in the occasional guest spot to fill the empty space Boyd leaves. Bela would be nice. Robert Randolph would be even cooler. Any sort of Keyboard sound would be neat too. There is a lot of options and I hope the “adoption” part of their change is a slow multilayered decision rather than just voting in a new violinist.

Things will be fine and I hope Boyd finds his peace and comes out stronger than he has been in recent years.

Given the statement from the band, they certainly tried to frame it as Boyd's decision. He probably showed up and wasn't ready to go, so they had to convince him to step away and seek help. I imagine feelings are hurt all around and the brevity of the official statement only signals the need for a cooling off period.

Lots of directions they could go without a violin, but I hope it's a less heavy electric sound.

I hope Boyd has the support around him to get mentally and physically healthier.

Yep. I also find it strange that the statement sounded less personal than they would give to a roadie.

I doubt he's coming back. After Dave gets to play with a full time violinist again, don't think Boyd is gonna be a big concern.

Re: The Decision: Boyd Leaving DMB

Another thing that doesn't sit well with me is that ( unless he truly butchered rehearsals ... If they even did them) he playing hasn't been bad lately . It's certainly better than some of his all time lows ( like when he was dropping bows)

In the concert for Charlottesville , he sounded right at or above par. People said he looked really sedated , but to me he just looked focused on playing . He probably was off drugs then hahaha. Seriously , he sounds fine on DDTW , fine on warehouse , really good on satellite , hits his part fine on YMDT , and hits the mark of grey street.

He didn't get a solo , and he wasn't amped up in volume ... But I thought his playing was fine .

This makes me think that this was not something that has been in the works for a while and was more of a sudden thing . But the band has been fucked for a while.

Who does recording for an album where you have one or two musicians come in at a time and record parts . There's no group creativity , no jamming . Maybe Boyd had enough of being marginalized . I think there must be some internal strife behind the scenes .... Or maybe I'm completely wrong and Boyd has cancer that he wants to keep private .

Either way , with how this was announced and the bands response , information is seriously limited and all we have is speculation .

Hopefully the band can one day make some special music again and hopefully they come out and tell us some more ( even though we are not entitled to it)

I would say the only thing we are entitled to ( assuming Boyd gets healthy) is at least a final show . Then Dave and the rest can go whatever direction they want.

Didn’t read the whole thread, most of it, but I read rumors on other message boards of a #metoo incident that allegedly took place at while he was playing with Crystal Garden. It’s nothing but rumors, but could this be a last second PR move to remove him prior to allegations? Again, it’s a rumor on a message board, but the timing is pretty odd.

Yeah that basically just says you can listen to the stream for the presale code.

It's not saying the show is being streamed.

Also, why is there not a webcast available for purchase for tonight? Do CBS & DMB not like money? Seems like a no brainer to offer a webcast for $20-30. It’s a damn Super Bowl event, even. It should be on TV
