3 Wishes about Dave Matthews Band

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...08cd26ad95.jpg

So, you know the story...

You’re walking along a beach and find an old lamp. When you rub the sand off, a genie appears. He offers you three wishes... about Dave Matthews Band.

No matter if possible or not, you are free to choose what you want. About the band formation, albums, future of the band.. just use your imagination.

For the first 100 comments, you have two bonus wishes for free:
- one bonus wish for one show that will become a Live Album (or LT);
- one bonus wish for an imaginary venue that you want DMB to perform one day (and you attend, of course).

3 Wishes about Dave Matthews Band

ONE: I wish a SPECIAL GUEST TOUR. In other world a whole tour where every night there will be a surprise guest playing with the band. All the songs with the guests will be collected on a DVD.

TWO: I wish that Hamilton De Holanda was a full-time touring member of DMB, instead of Tim (I wrote that in another thread, then I had the idea of this thread title).

THREE: I wish that Carter could play till 80, maybe in a different way (no more Ultra High Octane, maybe a bit more jazzy, like Charlie Watts for example).

    —-

Bonus Wish One 12.03.2013 - Johannesburg, South Africa, with Hugh Masekela, as next LT.

Bonus Wish Two A full show accompanied with an Orchestra at “Arena di Verona”, Italy

Overall I'm pretty happy with where the band is 30 years in, I think they sound really good, but off the top of my head:
    wish 1: bring back dmblive
wish 2: Dave write better setlists (more variety)
    wish 3: b-sides album

1)- Some system of allowing us to purchase soundbounds is released in a way that still allows the Band to make money without too many piracy concerns
2)- At least 7-10 more years of touring in them
3)- I liked the idea about playing full albums in 1/2 the show coupled with other fan favorites /rarities / guests in the 2nd half

Bonus 1)- Live Trax would be D & T from 2017 box set. Any 2-night set but would be partial to the June shows at the Mann in Philly (one of my home venues)

Bonus 2)- Would love to see a small club show where 100-200 or so people got to have a more intimate setting but one that they still played from their full catalog.

    1. Management that would listen to fans' wishes (stuff like certain LTs, vinyl reissues, etc.)
    2. Another Dave solo album
    3. Carter stays in good health so they can go on for 5, 7 or even 10 years longer

Bonus 1 - August 5th, 2004 at Riverbend Music Center as an LT on vinyl
Bonus 2 - I'd like another show at Cincinnati Music Hall

    1) Bring in a full time violinist

    2) One selected fan per show gets to write the set list and get VIP access for the show

    3) Studio albums with guests instruments and guest vocals. Kind of like what Santana did with Supernatural

Wish 1 Box set of May 18 & 19th 2001. Shows at Pac Bell Park.

Wish 2 DMB Live at the Budokan (will also be released on Blu-Ray and CD or Digital Download)

They still have a saxophone. They don't have a violin. I would hardly say rest is superfluous lol.

    Two Step >
    Ants Marching
    Do You Remember
    Broken Things

I've yet to miss violin on the level I miss Roi...and I'm a big fan of Jeff.

So, for me the other thoughts I have ARE superfluous. And not intending to be a prick, nothing anyone else has posted matters to me either. Roi remains the only thing I'd change. I'm pretty much fine with the various changes and differences...the overall evolution of the band.

To each their own and each's own is all good.

    One: Violin back. (NOT Boyd.)

Two: DMB teams up with Rob Cavallo to record their next album, looks like this (all freshly recorded):

    Bismarck
    [New Song]
    Crazy Easy>>
    Sugar Will
    [New Song]
    [New Song]
    Break Free
    Kill the King
    [New Song]
    Death on the High Seas
    [New Song]
    [New Song]
    Shotgun

It's called Chasing The Avalanche. Comes with full BTS documentary. Beats a Taylor Swift album for Album of the Year.

Three: Full scrapped studio songs/sessions released in a giant box-set, and mastered. (Any pre-2000s songs/jams, Lillywhite Sessions, 2004 sessions, Final Batson Sessions, 2009 Cavallo jams including "That Pace," 2013-2015 Cavallo album, etc.)

Bonus 1: 25th Anniversary Show gets a full official release with Blu-ray. Mixed like the full live albums, not LT.
    Bonus 2: Definitely Red Rocks

Oh of course, you're entitled to your opinion...I guess I just have difficulty empathizing with it. For instance, I just can't understand how you can hear a 2018 or later Ants Marching and think that having Roi back would improve the way it sounds more than a violinist would. But so be it, you have no obligation to explain it to me. Not taking anything away from Roi either. His sound clearly worked with the band far better than Jeff's does.

Edit: Or maybe you don't think that at all but you're just focused on Roi which is fine.

Based on what we've seen through the years, it seems Roi not dying (assuming the band stayed together) would have either eliminated OR mitigated many of the things others are wishing for.

Maybe Boyd keeps his shit together, maybe they do better set lists, etc.

As to Ants, it still jams, just differently. That said, it's one of those tunes I don't need to hear the band play again. I'm there for it, but I'm not 100% tuned it...so many other songs are more interesting to me than Ants.

Roi was not only a stellar voice that's missing, he was clearly a bit of the glue.

3 Wishes about Dave Matthews Band

That’s an interesting conversation. I think both of you made good points, I ‘d like to add some of my thoughts:

Grilldanmo is right, Roi was a bit the glue of DMB. The good guy. The guy that tells a joke when everybody was tense, that tries to mediate between Dave and Carter’s different opinions.

But, spite of that, the band was about to split two time in Roi’s years, after the LWS/ED thing, and in 2007, in the post SU.

Nobody knows - in a sliding doors world - what would have happened if the poor Roi had decided to go somewhere else, that morning.
Maybe in three years the band would have split, who knows?

Maybe the death of Roi forced everybody to continue, to give a reason for that big loss.
Without Roi defusing the upcoming tension, all the members of the band could have felt an higher sense of responsibility, and cohesion. Like they were fighting for something.

Probably Dave Matthews Band could have not carried on without Dave (like Queen disappeared after Freddy Mercury), but they could continue without Roi, in the name of Roi.

Sometimes a dead brings more propulsion than the same person alive. I am thinking about the whole Floyd story, just to make an example. Brings an ideal to the people.

What I meant to say, simply, is that maybe Roi IS the glue.

3 Wishes about Dave Matthews Band

And about Boyd...from interviews and readings, I have the feeling that, apart from the sound, the guy was becoming more and more unpleasant to the other band members.

I don’t feel that much “we miss Boyd” feeling, today. Maybe that Boyd “incident” has become just a good opportunity for the band to take the bad teeth out.

And if they want a violin back, to bring back that sound, there are plenty of great musicians around. See for example what Larry Campbell did with Ants Marching, last yearhere

But I am convinced, putting Buddy Strong instead of another violin, that, as someone said, they want to explore new sound, a bit more funky. I don’t think we’ll have another violinist ever.... but sometimes wishes become true.

So strange that many of you want to fire Rashawn just when he reached the top of his career (in terms of performances)

Yea, personally I think they could carry on without any member, except for Dave. Many people will argue that Carter can't be replaced and ultimately, that is true in that his talent would be incredibly difficult to match - but I'd rather Dave give it a shot with a different drummer than just hang it up all together. I think it can be done. I would start with this guy:

    https://youtu.be/YsXCRXG9jew?t=308

When Carter's done though, I think it's almost a certainty the band is done, though.

I know you just ended by saying you do think when Carter is done, the band is done, and I agree with you completely. But I'm also interested in what you said before that, that in your opinion they could go on without any member but Dave. Do you mean "The Dave Matthews Band" could go on without anyone but Dave? Or do you mean Dave Matthews and maybe Stefan/Carter could go on without Stefan or Carter as another band making amazing music?

Because to me the reason they wouldn't go on if Carter left is beyond just Carter's insane drumming. It's the way Carter is Dave's anchor during shows (or at least used to be, if that's changed let me know). But while Dave often checks in with most/all band members at points during a show, Carter is his rock, his home base. I don' tknow how that translates when recording (Roi was also much much more of a home base during writing and recording than he was onstage for Dave) but I know if Carter left, the touring DMB just seems like it wouldn't survive.

So when you say you think DMB could survive losing any member but Dave, do you mean you think "DMB" could continue without Carter? Or that DM could make great music without him but not as DMB?

I don't think Dave would continue DMB without Carter. I do think he would continue it without any other member though. And I also think that if he wanted to, he could continue DMB without Carter. I think there is talent out there that could replicate, on a sound stand point, what Carter does when performing with DMB. The reason I don't think Dave would continue without Carter though, as you mentioned, is his relationship with Carter (beyond the music aspect).

With respect to recording, the band could absolutely continue recording music without any member. Would they? Who knows. They barely record together now lol. This isn't early DMB anymore where the band gets together in a studio and makes music together. At least that wasn't the case with CT and the new album that may or may not come out.
