I really think he can't pull off folk. Not in the same vein as the new guys (Fleet Foxes, Mumford, Avett, Iron & Wine, etc) or the old guys (Young, Dylan, Baez, Taylor, etc.)

    But whatever. We'll see

I'm somewhat on the same page as you, but I honestly can't put a gauge on what he can or cannot do musically.

After hearing 'Your Body Is a Wonderland', if someone told me this guy is going to do a very solid cover of 'Bold As Love' in a couple years, I would've thought the same way.

Right now, I'm not putting anything past him, but I'm not sure if he can pull it off as successfully as his other endeavors.

I agree with this. I should've said "he can't pull it off convincingly"

i think "Who Says" is basically his Dylan-esque folk style. i'm not surprised at all.

yeah, the music to that song is pretty folky (and dangerously similar to 'stop this train') but the lyrics are pretty awful. hopefully if he really plans on putting out a folky album he will put more thoughts in his lyrics and sing about something other than a girl. folk music is supposed to be deeper than that.

Just came across this. It's a review from the WPB show last week, and I think this pretty much sums up where JM is mentally. The first paragraph where he says that he's going to "take 10 minutes out of each show for the rest of the tour to play shit I love". I think that says it all, to me at least.

Also, interesting to see that the writer thought this show was better than DMB's at WPB. Sorry, but I gotta laugh at that one

I think Mayer could make a killer folk album if he writes a bunch of songs with a Stop this Train vibe.

Yeah, that's what I mean. Sure, the music is sort of folky, but he lacks the spirit of it.

Dylan has pooped better lyrics than that.

Agreed as well. I always thought Who Says was some super cheap imitation of Rainy Day Woman #12 & #35.

John Mayer is the ultimate conundrum of an artist. On one hand he admits that he likes writing pop songs. I especially have a hard time taking him seriously here when he writes about heartbreak, when we all know full well he is smashing a new girl every night and loving it. On the other hand, I saw him perform at Crossroads with the Trio, blues-filled, and he smoked it. Came out on stage, said about three words during the performance consisting of "Hello" and "Thank You", and laid down one of the better sets of the day in a line-up filled with Jeff Beck, Clapton, ZZ Top, etc.

Who knows with him. I think he can take his music to great places, but with him, that's not a guarantee.

Look up a live heartbreak warfare from 2010 (I went to SPAC). And you can see he means every word. That song was about Jennifer Aniston when she left him for Bradley Cooper.

So yea, he can basically point to a girl and she will fuck him but thats just sex. Doesn't mean he's not looking to love someone, or has loved someone in the past and had his heart smashed.

I saw him twice this year, and they were both good shows. The last show I saw he was completely fucked up and didn't make sense anytime he opened his mouth...but the shows were enjoyable, especially when he and Keith Urban played together. That was awesome! But he really does need to decide what direction he wants to go...folk? Blues? Pop? I can't stand his pop stuff...I really wish he would just stick to blues. Continuum was such a fantastic album...

this is how I feel. I don't think I would want to hang out around the guy. However, Continuum may be one of my favorite albums from the past decade. Also, Assassin and Edge of Desire from his recent album are some of his best songs he has written imo.

The songs are pretty good, but the whole thing seems forced. from the look to the harmonica it just seems like he's trying to fit a folk-y image. but at least the music is good, that's really the only thing i care about john mayer for.
