Re: What was the last movie you watched?

even if you only look at other nominees, they easily could have given some group of: beale street, can you ever forgive me, a quiet place, cold war, the ballad of buster scruggs, and first reformed BP noms and it would have looked a lot better

First Man, Eighth Grade, and Annihilation are others that I think would have better choices for BP nominees than what was nominated. This awards season has really made no sense at all so far, so who knows.

Culturally, Black Panther was the movie of the year. I have no issue with its inclusion.

I'd rather include it than create a popular film category that only serves as a consolation prize.

Isn’t it “Best Picture”? It was not even a great movie, it was an average superhero movie.

I get its cultural significance, but it’s not even close to being the best picture of the year.

It's interesting though that Black Panther and Bohemian Rhapsody show up in the Best Picture field the same year the Academy toyed with the idea of a "Popular Film" category.

Watched Eighth Grade the other day and thought it was awful. I don’t get the appeal at all.

I agree a little, but I found it incredibly boring at times. The acting was fantastic, just couldn't keep my interest.

Yeah, the visuals were more memorable than the story itself. But Dafoe was excellent. So was Mads Mikkelsen as the priest.

What the hell does “Best Picture” even mean, and to whom? Plenty cite it as their favorite movie of the year, including the union the Actor’s work for. In five years, more people will remember it than probably every other film nominated.

    Blockers

I found this to be way better than originally anticipated. Gets sappy and stupid at points, but overall, have multiple LOL moments. Cena was hilarious

I thought it did a great job of coming across as an authentic middle school experience that captured what it's like in modern times regarding social media and such. It was gut wrenching to watch certain scenes because it reminded me of how awkward those years in school were.

Well, to your point, it's an important movie culturally in that it's the first superhero movie featuring a predominantly African American cast and the first focusing on an African American hero (other than Blade, Spawn, Steel, and Hancock).

But, by that same token, Wonder Woman should have been nominated for best picture the year it was released.

Subjectively, I didn't think BP was a good movie, at all. The best part of it was Killmonger. Storytelling, cinematography, acting, CGI...all looked like pretty standard superhero fare to me.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

I mean, that's fine. my point was that it's been widely critically-acclaimed and awarded for many aspects of its production, including music, art direction, and costumes (all of which it is nominated for on sunday)

people have thought highly of it because it represents a fully-realized vision of a unique afrofuturism perspective. it's not nominated by default

black panther wasn't one of my favorites of the year, so I don't really want to get into a whole defense. but looking back on the year in film I don't at all have a problem with it being representative. especially when compared to some other films that are getting BP noms

WW probably should have, so should have Logan. There are plenty of snubs every year. I’m very confused as to why last year matters at all when it comes to this year’s nominees?

I loved it. Based on a true story and I thought both Melissa McCarthy and Richard Grant had great chemistry in the movie. Was a top 10 movie of the year for me.

    Into the Spiderverse...

Don't really get the hype. It was fine, but nothing terribly awesome. Would have been in the 30's on my list if I hadn't already submitted.
