Re: **The Official Vinyl Collectors Thread**

So I’ve been slowly working on getting every single Beatles and Pink Floyd studio album on vinyl (preferably newer pressings), and I’m just about there. With some orders I’ve made recently that I’m waiting to be delivered, all I have left for The Beatles is Please Please Me and Beatles for Sale. Because of the demand right now, I’m waiting on prices to come back down for those.

For Pink Floyd, I have a few more to get. Saucerful of Secrets, More, Ummagumma, The Final Cut, and The Endless River. Unfortunately, I know I’ll be buying some real duds to complete that list. Either way, it’s a goal!

Blows my mind that the old Beatles titles are on high demand. When I got into vinyl years ago they were everywhere for like $10.
I wish I would have picked them up. They wouldn't be the updated remasters, but still. They all are impossible to find right now at a reasonable price.

I realize some people don’t care about this - but Luther wasn’t remastered for vinyl. It’s the same master that was pressed on CD, which sounds fantastic. Nothing against the vinyl pressing - it’s very good by all accounts, but I stuck with the CD even at normal retail of $65-$80 for the vinyl set. I’m more upset about other OOP DMB LT vinyl releases I missed out on.
Honestly, it doesn't seem to matter if the recording is really good. It sounds amazing in all formats to my ears. Considering the latest LT WAS mastered for vinyl and sounds terrible, who cares.

I'm starting to get some S hiss and I'm around 350-400 hours on this needle (came with the U-Turn when Baboon rec'd it)

About time for a new one?

Depending on which stylus you have (is it the AT91B yellow cartridge?), it could be time to replace. Generally, you’d hope to get closer to the 600-800 hour range, but that is also a very very entry level (and very budget) cart/stylus, so it’s possible its time is up. Before deciding to move on, I’d suggest double checking alignment and VTF (you can learn about and print out a protractor out here and there’s a few $15ish stylus gauges on Amazon to measure the tracking force). If alignment looks okay and the VTF is right and you still are getting sibilance issues, then it’s time for a new stylus.

If you like the sound signature of the Ortofon 2Ms (I assume you had a Red before the Blue?), perhaps look into the upgrade to the Bronze. The 2M bronze remains my favorite stylus in the sub $500 range that I’ve ever personally heard.

    I have a red Ortofon 2M

I'll take your advice about the alignment and VTF and go from there

    Thanks!

Ah, so since you have the 2M Red, one other point to note is that one of the biggest complaints about that cart/stylus is that once it gets some wear on it, it does struggle with IGD (inner groove distortion) and produces some harsher high-end frequency (which you are hearing as sibilance). It may not necessarily need to be replaced but if it’s bugging you, it might be time for a change anyways - though it shouldn’t cause any damage or excess west on your records.

If you liked the sound it had, all you need is a replacement stylus (not a whole cart). TTL has them for $87: https://www.turntablelab.com/product...lus-for-2m-red

However, if you want a bit of an upgrade, you can move up to the blue without swapping the cart (the stylus shape and style fit the Red card). It’s pricier but a very solid upgrade. $177 is the cheapest I can find it with a quick search, but I’ve seen them as low a $140ish on eBay: https://lptunes.com/products/ortofon-2m-blue-stylus

Great information all around, especially about the bolded. I appreciate it

I'll see if it's alignment/VTF and then, if I'm still hearing sibilance, I'll probably progress to a replacement stylus. I might think about the upgrade to the blue, too! I'm enough of a music nerd that it's probably worth it

Heck, maybe hit up AJF - depending on how many hours his Blue has on it, if he does upgrade maybe he can send that styli your way for a better price than a brand new one and you can at least try it out and see if you like the sound profile?

Any tips for setting the alignment on a new cart? I bought an AT VM95ML for my Rega P3. It’s a micro linear stylus. I need to print a protractor, but I also think I’m overthinking this and getting worried that I’ll screw up the cart if I don’t have the alignment perfectly correct.

Looking to get a new tuner, I have an older Harmon Kardon. What are the thoughts of this Sony?

    Or any other suggestions?

I bought and set up a new stylus today.

My Blue is probably 3-4 years old. I think it’s still got plenty of life left.

Let me know if you’d like it. I can ship to you - give it a whirl and see if you like it.

Feel free to PM me so we don’t clog up thread.

Local shop has Red Rocks in stock right now. I'm tempted, but that $125 is a pretty steep price considering I'm hopefully going to be putting in some ticket requests soon.

Does anyone else wish discogs would prompt all vinyl reviews with "do you currently own a crosby cruiser, victrola, etc. or LP60?" and filter those reviews? The amount of people complaining about perfectly fine pressings skipping and being garbage always infuriates me. I know when I read one to just dismiss it but still. I guess it's like craft beer and everyone with a palate is an expert even if they don't understand what they're reviewing.

Me too. I got into vinyl in 2006, the OG versions were like $3. I get the remastered 2012 ones are the ones people are after, but you can't find either right now for a reasonable price.

It's worth it! One of the best sets DMB has put out on vinyl. I get if it means seeing them this year vs buying the record. The record is likely not going anywhere.

will be picking up Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio and maybe the Vince Guaraldi 7". Deadmau5 is releasing two titles in the UK so I will be trying to get those imported as well

The Dead, jerry Garcia acoustic band, and willie seem to be peaking my interest. Really thought dmb was going to be on the list since it was rumored that 58 leapfrogged a vinyl release

It did, but not necessarily an RSD release

It’s been a while since DMB had a proper RSD release anyways. LT35 was intended to be one, but it was delayed and released as an “independent record store exclusive”.

The white DMBLive releases (and the Again & Again/She 7”) were the last RSD titles to be in store on event day from the band. That was in 2018

Thats why I like Steve Hoffman Forums, you can see peoples listening setups in their profile. Which I suppose someone could lie about, but its an extra step towards knowing when to ignore a bad review.
